The catalogue of an exhibition of drawings and prints created by Picasso between March 16 and October 5 1968 in Mougins. "The sheets to which the artist gave no title are all dated and numbered in the order in which they were created. In this chronological order they are also shown in the exhibition so that the viewer is drawn into the dramatic tension of this work process in a unique way from page to page and from day to day - sometimes six or seven graphics were created in one day." Introduction translated The exhibition was staged in three locations in Germany between June 1 and October 12 1969. The introduction to the catalogue was written by Boris Blacher and short essays were contributed by Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann and Felix Andreas Baumnn. Provenance: Kohner family. The name of the recipient is close to illegible however the family records that Picasso inscribed the book to Walter Kohner a theatrical agent who worked alongside his brother at the legendary Paul Kohner Agency on Hollywood Boulevard representing stars including Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman. Walter Paul and a third brother Frederick the novelist screenwriter and author of the "Gidget" books were born in Czechoslovakia but emigrated to California as the Nazis gained sway in Europe. Walter's childhood sweetheart Hanna remained in Europe and miraculously survived internment in four concentration camps including Auschwitz before reuniting with Walter at the end of the war. Their own account of their remarkable story was published in 1984. In 1953 Hanna told their story on This is Your Life - the first non-celebrity ever to appear on the show. unknown books
1933réf. 8090London: Oxford University Press 1933. First edition in English. Very Good. One of a hundred copies signed by Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso on the limitation page and with the Oxford University Press typewritten publication announcement laid in. A Very Good copy. With two plates: a frontispiece by Picasso designed specifically for this edition and a photo reproduction of Cocteau in costume as Huertebise. Publisher's black cloth elegantly rebacked in white leather. Boards and spine titled in gilt. Slight wear to edges of boards and some foxing mostly to preliminaries. Orphée Jean Cocteau's retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice was first performed in French in Paris in 1926. This Oxford University Press edition was the first publication of the play in English and the first to feature the frontispiece by Picasso which was designed for this edition and features an abstract portrait of Orpheus with a lyre. The publication announcement reads "For this English edition Picasso has done a frontispiece and for that reason alone should make of this book a production of unique importance. The fact that for 12/6 purchasers can own the signature of both Cocteau and Picasso ought to guarantee the rapid exhaustion of the limited copies." Cocteau loosely adapted Orphée into the 1950 film Orpheus. The film became the second part of his Orphic Trilogy preceded by The Blood of a Poet 1930 and followed by Testament of Orpheus 1960. Orpheus remains Cocteau's most acclaimed film . "Orphée should appeal strongly to all who delight in finding the joy of new artistic vision and expression. The play is unlike anything that has been done before. It would be foolish to pretend that Orphée is everyone's meat. But everyone ought to experiment and see at least whether it is his" publication announcement. Very Good. Oxford University Press unknown books

"All true 'aficionados' are drawn to the bull-ring by the same irrepressible enthusiasm. Each of them is prey to the same desire the same passion: to see his torero 'torear' his one and only 'diestro' the matador of his predilection the being who commands his fervent admiration - often for reasons quite unknown to the aficionado himself. The lithographs were issued unsigned for the series A Los Toros avec Picasso and published by Sauret in 1961 in an edition of 125. There was also an edition of 50 signed examples printed from the same lithographic stones by Mourlot Frères at the same time. The stone for this lithograph was originally drawn in black as were the other three lithographs in the series. However the publisher Andre Sauret asked Picasso if he would add a little color to the image. Picasso had a box of crayons in 24 different colors and used each of them to color this image. Much to his surprise the Mourlot studio printers succeeded in the difficult task of printing all 24 colors plus black. This explains the two dates on this print. Signed and dated "8.6.54" by Picasso on the title page with an original black ink sketch of a bull's head. Publisher's stapled pictorial yellow wrappers printed in black. Near fine with some toning to wrappers a couple of small closed tears to right edge of front wrapper and Hôtel Drouot auction venue stamp "AUTHENTIQUE / Auteur: blank / Embassy / HÔTEL DROUOT / PARIS - FRANCE" to recto of leaf preceding title page. Overall a scarce original drawing by Picasso of one of his favorite subjects. Between 1950 and 1953 was a highly productive and innovative period for Picasso. During that time he lived in Vallauris in the South of France with Françoise Gilot and their two children and worked out of the perfume-factory-turned-art-studio Le Fournas and at the Madoura workshop. The Nov. 24-Dec. 19 1953 exhibition at Curt Valentin Gallery showcased the range of Picasso's work during those years featuring 28 oil paintings 18 sculptures 6 ceramics 11 lithographs and 2 aquatints. New York Times art critic Howard Devree writes of the exhibition "Here are some of the diabolical deliberately ugly profile-and-full-face-at-once portraits; landscapes semi-abstract and semi-expressionist which are powerful formal organizations; ceramics such as 'The Picador' which are primarily decorative; sculptures such as the preternaturally wise or witch-like owls in several media; at least one figure 'The Kneeling Woman' in which he seems to have extended cubism; lithographs and aquatints which make one marvel anew at his unmatched wizardry of linear expressiveness " Nov. 29 1953. The bull was a recurring and totemic motif in Picasso's work throughout his entire career. His fascination with the animal stemmed from childhood when he was often taken by his father to Spanish bullfights in his hometown in Málaga Spain. Even in the Curt Valentin exhibition there were multiple works related to bulls and bullfighting including the ceramics "Blue Picador" "Picador" and "Toreador." Hôtel Drouot is a historic auction venue in Paris France that has been in operation since 1852. The venue has long been recognized as the keystone of the Paris art market and is home to about 70 independent auction firms. . Inscribed. First Edition. Original Wrappers. Near Fine.
