"Dora Maar born Henriette Theodora Markovitch in 1907 was a talented artist in her own right. While studying painting she soon found a passion and gift for photography and became a prominent member of the Surrealist movement. This catalogue traces her relationship with Picasso from the time of their first meeting in late 1935 through 1937. Picasso expert Anne Baldassari demonstrates how those years were critical for both artists and how their interaction provided mutual inspiration through the mid-1940s. The relationship is set within the context of major historical events from the Spanish Civil War and the Popular Front to the rise of fascism and World War II. This chronological account brings a legend to life allowing the reader unique access to two artistic minds. Maar s photographs alongside Picasso's drawings paintings and poems serve as a guide through the critical period in which these two figures influenced one another. Preserved in her studio archives Maar's negatives and contact prints allow us to analyze in detail the intimacy of the life she shared with Picasso in all of its states as well as the evolution of his art including the colossal Guernica. This exquisite volume features . . . personal mementos--including notes scrawled on matchboxes and small sketches which are produced on onion skin paper throughout. This book sheds light on the profound mark left upon Picasso and his work by their dynamic relationship." - Publisher. réf. PP003New York: Curt Valentin Gallery 1953 With text by Paul Eluard translated by Roland Penrose. First edition first printing. Signed and dated "8.6.54" by Picasso on the title page with an original black ink sketch of a bull's head. Publisher's stapled pictorial yellow wrappers printed in black. Near fine with some toning to wrappers a couple of small closed tears to right edge of front wrapper and Hôtel Drouot auction venue stamp "AUTHENTIQUE / Auteur: blank / Embassy / HÔTEL DROUOT / PARIS - FRANCE" to recto of leaf preceding title page. Overall a scarce original drawing by Picasso of one of his favorite subjects. Between 1950 and 1953 was a highly productive and innovative period for Picasso. During that time he lived in Vallauris in the South of France with Françoise Gilot and their two children and worked out of the perfume-factory-turned-art-studio Le Fournas and at the Madoura workshop. The Nov. 24-Dec. 19 1953 exhibition at Curt Valentin Gallery showcased the range of Picasso's work during those years featuring 28 oil paintings 18 sculptures 6 ceramics 11 lithographs and 2 aquatints. New York Times art critic Howard Devree writes of the exhibition "Here are some of the diabolical deliberately ugly profile-and-full-face-at-once portraits; landscapes semi-abstract and semi-expressionist which are powerful formal organizations; ceramics such as 'The Picador' which are primarily decorative; sculptures such as the preternaturally wise or witch-like owls in several media; at least one figure 'The Kneeling Woman' in which he seems to have extended cubism; lithographs and aquatints which make one marvel anew at his unmatched wizardry of linear expressiveness " Nov. 29 1953. The bull was a recurring and totemic motif in Picasso's work throughout his entire career. His fascination with the animal stemmed from childhood when he was often taken by his father to Spanish bullfights in his hometown in Málaga Spain. Even in the Curt Valentin exhibition there were multiple works related to bulls and bullfighting including the ceramics "Blue Picador" "Picador" and "Toreador." Hôtel Drouot is a historic auction venue in Paris France that has been in operation since 1852. The venue has long been recognized as the keystone of the Paris art market and is home to about 70 independent auction firms. . Inscribed. First Edition. Original Wrappers. Near Fine. EXCERPTS FROM THE BOOKLET: "Few names are as evocative as that of Guernica. The ruthless bombardment of this small Basque town a regional capital and ancient pilgrimage site became one of the blackest and bloodiest spots in the history of the twentieth century. Today it no longer represents only the massacre of a civilian population and a point of no return in the rise of Fascism: Picasso's painting gave to the name of Guernica the scope of a universal symbol that expresses the barbarism of modern warfare. After its militant exhibitions in 1937 Paris and 1939 New York its long exile and its final arrival in Madrid this 'living legend' is displayed behind bulletproof glass in the Cason del Buen Retiro of the Prado Museum. . Picasso executed forty-five sketches between May 1 and June 4 1937 some of which stand on their own as complete drawings. They included six compositional studies four studies of the horse one of the bull one of the horse and bull alone ten of heads of the horse and bull ten studies of female heads six of the woman with a dead child one of the horse and the woman with the child three heads of dead warriors a study of a man with raised arms and two studies of hands. He used a variety of mediums: pencil india ink gouache and oils; and supports: white blue and brown paper plywood and canvas. These studies are not only extraordinary drawings in their own right but they also show the different states of mind through with Picasso passed as he was working on the painting. They are like a seismograph of his thoughts and feelings and so they permit us to understand what he really wanted to paint in Guernica. A study of these sketches reveals the progress of the artist at work - his hesitations his searching the choices he made. They show the slow formation of the images the maturation of the initial idea the successive contributions the departures; in short Picasso's way of working and as such they constitute the laboratory of Guernica. réf. 28434Alès PAB mars 1967. 1 vol.
