1947ref. 48620Paris.: Latitud Curenta y Uno. Le Degré Quarante et Un / 41º. 1947 / 1948. . Oblong folio. 396 x 620 mm. Etching grattoir and burin on copper by Picasso printed on a full sheet of parchment pierced at edges for printing and with central fold by Roger Lacourière Paris; sheet size: 396 x 310 mm folded 396 x 620 mm unfolded. A very rare signed proof of the cover for 'Pis'mo: Escrito por Iliazd / Grabado por Picasso' Picasso's 1948 collaboration with Iliazd.Picasso's etching with grattoir and burin is for the vellum cover of the 1948 book 'Pis'mo' also known as 'Escrito por Iliazd / Grabado por Picasso'. The text of the book is a love poem in Russian by Iliazd one of the very few he wrote after leaving Georgia inspired by his meeting with Olga Djordjadze - Picasso too met her later - in Cannes in 1946. Picasso's print includes the title in Russian correctly at the top and incorrectly and effaced beneath as well as at right the figure of a woman seen from behind and turned away from the viewer; Picasso has dated the print '3 mars 47' in the copperplate which is printed in reverse. The present proof is printed on a sheet of vellum as for the published book although slightly whiter and slightly thinner than the published version and while it does have a central fold it is unfolded at the head and foot and is pierced around the outer edge of the sheet with small pinholes as part of the printing process. Signed at lower right by Picasso the sheet is annotated by Iliazd verso above and beneath the visible platemark 'haut' and 'bas' and 'Plier à l'envers'; Iliazd appears too to have drawn a pencil frame it differs from the engraved area to the verso beneath the 'haut' and 'bas'. A different hand has annotated the foot of the blank area adjacent to the printed section: 'Picasso P. Eau-forte pour la couverture du livre d'Iliazd 'ESCRITO' 1er Epreuve d'essai sur parchemin / le livre a été tiré à 66 exemplaires'.Proofs of the cover are very rare and examples signed by Picasso rarer still. Baer suggests that several trials and proofs were taken from Picasso's plate noting the 'bon à tirer' example on 'vélin sans filigrane' Georges Bloch's copy on parchment inscribed 'tirage d'essai' by Iliazd and signed at a later date by Picasso 'environ 7 épreuves sur parchemin avec annotations d'Iliazd sur la préparation du parchemin et le séchage' as well as a final signed example sold by Sotheby's in the 1970s.'In his poem 'Rogelio Lacourière pêcheur de cuivres' published in 'Hommage à Roger Lacourière 1968 Iliazd recalls in poetic terms the genesis of the book's title etching. The story goes that Lacourière had given Picasso a plate which was too large and which had a white mark to indicate where it should later be cut. Picasso - tempted by this extra space and the unexpected freedom it gave him - etched a nude on it. Lacourière therefore refrained from cutting the plate and Iliazd noticed that the asymmetry thus created in the title etching echoed his conception of the folded pages: the 'magnaminous' painter had 'transfigured' the book.' ref. 1237971918 . Etching on zinc 1918 on Imperial Japan paper a particularly fine and rare impression signed and dedicated "Pour Galanis ses amis bien reconnaissants Max Jacob et Picasso" by the artist in pencil also signed by author Max Jacob in pencil inscribed '1er Epreuve' a fine impression of the rare unrecorded first state before the edition of 20 impressions as included as the frontispiece for Max Jacob's 'Le Phanérogame' printed by Les Presses Eugène Delâtre Paris with full margins sheet 25.5 x 16.8 cm. 10 x 6 5/8 in. One of only two copies mentioned in Baer outside of the numbered edition. The subscription announcement called for sixteen impressions on Imperial Japan paper including two signed impressions marked '0' and '00' and a further 30 impressions on Hollande paper. The print was ultimately issued mainly on Arches paper. Fourteen signed and numbered impressions are recorded together with the two author's copies on Japan of which this is one. Dedicated to Demetrios Galanis 1879-1966 a Greek artist and engraver who was a close friend of Picasso and Jacob. To help fund the printing of Max Jacob's Le Phanérogame Pablo Picasso contributed an etching of a Pierrot for the book's deluxe edition. Jacob dedicated the text to the poet André Salmon invoking memories of the Rue Ravignanthe site of the famed Bateau-Lavoir where Jacob Picasso Salmon and Guillaume Apollinaire forged their early artistic community. For Jacob the text distilled "the gaiety of that first youth which is the golden age of art". Though Picasso was deeply engaged with theatrical motifs and the Commedia dell'Arte in the spring of 1918 such iconography was hardly new to his practice. Harlequins acrobats and performers dominated his output during the years recalled by Jacoba period often categorized as his Circus or Rose Period when the group frequented the circus and identified closely with its marginalized itinerant performers. While the dancer Léonide Massine likely served as the immediate model for the pensive Pierrot the figure echoes Picasso's earlier saltimbanques and their intimate ties to his inner circle. 1969ref. 12596New York: Avant Garde Media Inc. September 1969. 29 x 28 cm. Large 4to. bound by Arthur Johnson in 1975 signed and dated on the lower turn-in in a mosaic binding of red goatskin with onlays in purple orange tan black and white goatskin yellow endpapers spine lettered in gilt along its entire length. Housed in the original red cloth felt lined clamshell box. In remarkably good condition. The bold design with a very keen sense of colour is a typical example of Johnson’s work which always achieved drama and wit alongside superb technique. He has made a fabulous stylised and abstract take on a Picasso erotic engraving in leather. Arthur Johnson 1920-2004 along with Edgar Mansfield Sally Lou Smith and others was instrumental in changing the course of bookbinding in Britain being one of the founding members of the Hammersmith Guild of Scribes and Bookbinders in 1950 which was intended to start a new movement in British bookbinding. These binders were reacting against the domination of established binding firms whose binders had excellent technical abilities but whose designs Johnson felt were ‘deplorable’ for their fussy insipid aesthetic: “their covers were reminiscent of carpets and chocolate boxes”. The Guild whose fellow members included Britain’s greatest binders such as Philip Smith Bernard Middleton Elizabeth Greenhill Trevor Jones and Ivor Robinson went on to become the Guild of Contemporary Bookbinders and then the Designer Bookbinders we know today. Avant Garde was a magazine renowned for its graphic design by Herb Lubalin. It was published in New York and ran for 14 issues between January 1968 and July 1971. A dramatic and witty binding by one of Britain’s great masters of bookbinding Avant Garde Media Inc. hardcover
