"Il cranio di ossidiana" è una celebrazione dell'arte del secolo pronunziata davanti alle spoglie del più grande artista del secolo; una meditazione su Picasso, sulla sua morte, sulla vita delle forme. Il genere dell'orazione funebre, così ridotto nella pratica moderna, ritrova in queste pagine la sua intensità e la sua severità. Inoltre, la celebrazione mostra qui di saper assolvere ai compiti dell'analisi. Un Picasso nuovo ci viene incontro da queste pagine; le opere di cui più si parla, ne "Il cranio di ossidiana", non sono le più divulgate; è il Picasso scultore, è il Picasso spasmodico delle ultime stagioni che Malraux splendidamente difende, illustra, giustifica; non l'artista di una gioventù blu e rosa, non l'annunciatore dell'ordine cubista, ma lo scatenato creatore di forme che, in un'opera colma di derisioni, seppe esprimere il sacro di un'epoca senza Sacro. Il museo dell'uomo contemporaneo quello che Malraux chiama il Museo Immaginario - si è infinitamente dilatato dai tempi di Cézanne: esso include ormai non solo le arti dell'occidente, le arti orientali, quelle arcaiche, ma anche l'esplosivo, irriducibile pandemonio delle arti selvagge (Africa, Oceania...); più di ogni altro, Picasso ha, con la sua opera, mediato e giustificato per noi quegli stili, di paura ed esorcismo; commemorando lui, Malraux commemora l'occhio di un secolo e quel che l'occhio vide.
