1894ref. 227381894. Mexico Anthropology Delorme Salto Rafael. Los aborígenes de América: disquisiciones acerca del asiento origen historia y adelanto en la esfera científica de las sociedades precolombinas. Madrid: Librería de Fernando Fé / Habana: La Propaganda Literaria 1894. First edition. With a prologue by General D. Vicente Riva-Palacio y Guerrero Mexican Minister Plenipotentiary to Spain. 8vo. Finely bound in later full red morocco with gilt rules and spine lettering marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Text in Spanish. A scarce anthropological treatise exploring pre-Columbian civilization through the lens of 19th-century scientific humanism authored by Spanish scholar Rafael Delorme Salto. Los aborígenes de América situates Indigenous American societies within a framework of comparative anthropology and early evolutionary theory attempting to reconcile European Enlightenment models of progress with Mesoamerican and Andean achievements in astronomy architecture and mathematics. Delorme writes admiringly of the "inteligencia" and "fuerza reflexiva" of early American peoples treating the Americas not as derivative cultures but as civilizations of independent scientific advancement. The work's prologue by Vicente Riva-Palacio a liberal general novelist and diplomat associated with Mexican nation-building intellectuals frames the book within transatlantic dialogue on indigeneity and modernity offering rare evidence of late 19th-century Spanish and Mexican collaboration in re-evaluating the legacies of conquest and colonial knowledge. Mild toning to some pages a 2" loss to the introduction page and mild foxing to margins else clean and tightly bound. Overall very good condition. A rare volume highlighting the intersection of Iberian anthropology and Mexican nationalism in the intellectual reappraisal of Indigenous America at the close of the 19th century. unknown books

A Scarce Essay on Insolvency Written When Great Britain was Emerging as a Modern Commercial Power: OCLC Locates 1 Copy in a North American Law Library Courteville Raphael 1675-1772. Arguments Respecting Insolvency. Dedicated to the Rt. Hon. Arthur Onslow Esq; Speaker of the House of Commons. London: Printed for M. Cooper At the Globe in Pater-Noster-Row 1760. vii 1 32 pp. Octavo 7-1/4" x 4"; 18.4 x 10.2 cm. Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet. Moderate toning light soiling to exterior upper outside corner of last leaf lacking with no loss to text "6" in small early hand to head of title page. A very good copy overall. $350. Only edition of this rare insightful commentary on the intersections of credit ethics and British law at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Writing at a pivotal moment when Great Britain's domestic and global commerce increasingly relied on complex credit networks Courteville offers an early sophisticated critique of the social and economic costs of imprisonment for debt alongside a rigorous analysis of contemporary bankruptcy statutes. Rather than viewing insolvency through a purely punitive or moralistic lens Courteville treats it as an unavoidable structural reality of a modern commercial state. He proposes a series of pragmatic legal reforms aimed at balancing the rights of creditors with the economic rehabilitation of honest debtors. To support his arguments he performs a comparative legal analysis-most notably drawing parallels to the mercantile laws of Holland-and scrutinizes recent insolvency acts passed by Parliament to illustrate where current British legislation fell short. Raphael Courteville is a fascinatingly multifaceted figure of the Georgian era. While chiefly remembered today as a notable organist at St. James's Westminster and a hymn composer he was also an aggressive and prolific political writer. For years he served as a dedicated state pamphleteer under the payroll of Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole frequently writing for The Daily Gazetteer under the pseudonym "Freeman"-a role that earned him the colorful nickname "Court-Evil" from his Tory detractors. This tract displays his characteristic polemical sharpness applied to legal and economic reform. OCLC locates 1 copy in a North American law library Library of Congress. 1836ref. 52758Mexico City: Palacio del Gobierno Nacional 1836. Fine. Official printed government notice of Mexico's continuing efforts to maintain control over Texas immediately after the loss at San Jacinto - here working with privateers to harass Texans at sea. When Mexico finally won its independence from Spain in 1821 its territory included modern-day Texas settled by a mix of Tejano Mexican and Texian Anglo-American populations in addition to indigenous tribes and enslaved African Americans. Tensions between the Tejano and Texian factions increased and finally erupted into full-scale violence in 1835 beginning what is now called the Texas Revolution. Its most famous battle at the Alamo occurred a few months before this broadside was issued. The decisive battle of the war San Jacinto occurred on 21 April a Mexican defeat that led to the formation of the Republic of Texas. While the Mexican general Santa Anna negotiated a surrender the Mexican government deposed him for it and refused to recognize an independent Texas. After San Jacinto Mexico avoided pitched battles but continued to take action to undermine and antagonize the new Texas nation. This broadside was one such effort issued just over a week after the defeat at San Jacinto. It announces the formal employment in the navy of private ships to aid in attacking Texans at sea and forming a blockade "para terminar la guerra con los colonos de Tejas é impedir el contrabando en los puertos y costas de la República". Privateers were necessary because the Mexican government did not yet have a robust navy a weakness that the United States would later exploit in the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848. Ephemeral broadsides like this survive in few numbers; many of this era during José Justo Corro's interim presidency show only two or three institutional holdings via OCLC. This particular imprint shows three institutional holdings in the US Baylor Texas A&M and Brigham Young. A rare piece of Texana. 12'' x 8.25''. Single letterpress broadside printed recto only. A bit of faint wrinkling. Crisp and bright. Palacio del Gobierno Nacional unknown books
