1962réf. 007991New York: Crown Publishers Inc 1962. First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good Minus. Inscribed in ink by Soyer to we believe Lillian Halegua and also a folded greeting card featuring on the front cover a mounted color plate of a Soyer painting of two women and inside an inked Season's Greetings from Soyer and his wife Rebecca written by Rebecca probably -- the writing is different than the book inscription. 4to. 26 by 18 cm. 127 pp. With 43 b/w plates of Soyer's artwork from the trip. Plates included in the pagination. The sketches are sometimes very sketchy and loose renderings and other times completed or fully realized works of art. Subjects include artwork which made a strong impression on Soyer including some totemic artwork sights and views that captured his fancy and portraits of important artists and authors he met among them Balthus Carlo Levi Henry Moore and Alberto Moravia. The text is more or less a diary written in a breezy style and we think convey a certain appealing modesty by the artist who also could be quite bold in seeking introductions to figures he didn't previously know such as Moravia. The DJ survives with several edge chips and short closed tears especially along the upper edge. The book itself has no significant issues. Crown Publishers, Inc unknown books

Joseph ha-Yerushalmi d. 1291 Fusá¹Äá¹ Egypt was a rigorous linguist and philologist philosopher and mystic and a biblical exegete of singular breadth. As well as providing us with an insight into the inner world of a profound and original thinker his oeuvre sheds light on a Jewish historical and cultural milieu that remains relatively poorly understood: the Islamic East in the post-Maimonidean period. In A Philosopher of Scripture: The Exegesis and Thought of Tanḥum ha-Yerushalmi Raphael Dascalu presents the first detailed intellectual portrait of Tanḥum ha-Yerushalmi. Tanḥum emerges as a polymath with a clear intellectual program an eclectic thinker who brought multiple traditions together in his search for the philosophical meaning of Scripture. Publisher Contents: Tanḥum ha-Yerushalmi's life and works -- Tanḥum's biblical exegesis in context -- Tanḥum's commentary to the Book of Jonah -- Tanḥum's commentary to Qohelet -- Tanḥum's commentary to the Song of Songs. Note: This is a revised version of the author's thesis doctoral--The University of Chicago 2016. Volume 80 in the Brill series "Etudes sur la Judaisme Medieval." EJM. Brill unknown books

Robert Cross Smith 1795-1832 was an English astrologer writing under the pseudonym of "Raphael". He married in 1820 and moved to London where he became interested in astrology. Together with G. W. Graham he published a book on geomancy in 1822. Smith began to edit a periodical entitled The Straggling Astrologer in 1824 but failed to receive enough subscribers and the periodical had to be discontinued after a few issues. He collected the issues of the failed periodical in a volume entitled The Astrologer Of The Nineteenth Century in the same year. From 1827 until his death in 1832 he edited an astrological almanac entitled The Prophetic Messenger. Also published by Smith was The Familiar Astrologer and A Manual of Astrology both in 1828. Smith died on 26 February 1832 in London. His almanac continued to be edited as Raphael's Ephemeris and would become a standard work in British and US American astrology.
