1856Best.-Nr. 41810Mexico City. 1856. Route Guides in Mexico and the Southwest An extremely valuable compilation which gives detailed data including route scenery and other key information about many various parts of Mexico. By piecing together the different itineraries it offers a traveler could basically go anywhere in Mexico and into the U.S. already provided with extremely detailed instructions about the best route and what facilities - such as water grass and shelter - were available every step of the way. A detailed name index listing routes and where they are to be found in the book further enhances the volume's usefulness for travelers be they headed to destinations great or small. Many of the routes described begin in Mexico City; some routes extend into Texas and New Mexico. Among the most interesting are two itineraries concerning California. This is one of the most detailed and expansively described routes in the entire book preserving a wealth of geographic and natural details. Many of the places detailed in this section have either disappeared or been extensively altered. The other journey is along the Sonora Route from Ures to Sonora to the California gold fields. This trip passes through Los Angeles and includes some commentary on the missions in the area. References: Cicognara 2404; Anthony Blunt "Don Vincenzo Vittoria" in The Burlington Magazine 109:766 1967 31-32. The author was a Spanish engraver and printer who lived and worked in Rome for part of his life. The text is a defense of Raphael and others from some dismissive remarks made by Carlo Cesare Malvasia in his promotion of the Carracci and of the Bolognese school "La Felsina Pittrice" 1678. Vittoria wrote the material probably in Spanish while still living in Valencia. In the preface he apologizes for his Italian which "lacks purity." The significance of the book according to the art historian Anthony Blunt lies in the author's descriptions of several drawings by Raphael and his contemporaries which are either lost or known only in engraved copies. 2022Best.-Nr. 347592Chicago: Haymarket Books 2022. Paperback. 293p. illustrated wraps very good condition. "Walt Whitman and His Caribbean Interlocutors: José Martí C.L.R. James and Pedro Mir explores the writings of Whitman 1819-1892 and of three Caribbean authors who engaged with them. These three interlocutors-the Cuban poet essayist and revolutionary José Martí 1853-1895; the Trinidadian activist historian and cultural critic C.L.R. James 1901-1989; and the Dominican poet Pedro Mir 1913-2000-all saw in the famous American poet and pacifist a key lens through which to understand North American capitalism and is imperial projections. Whitman and his Caribbean interlocutors are discussed against the backdrop of capitalist modernity's contradictions as exemplified by the United States between the 1840s and the 1940s. Bernabe deftly uses Marx's exploration of the liberating and oppressive dimensions of capitalist expansion to frame his discussion of each individual author and of Martí's James's and Mir's responses to Whitman." -back cover.
