The narrative traces Nagle's upbringing in a prosperous Catholic family her time in France where she received her own education and her return to Ireland where she began establishing schools for impoverished children in Cork city during the 1750s. Working initially in secret and later with growing confidence as enforcement of the Penal Laws relaxed Nagle built a network of schools that provided education to hundreds of children who would otherwise have had no access to it. The book follows her deepening commitment to religious life and her eventual founding of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1775 a congregation that would go on to establish schools and charitable institutions across Ireland and internationally. Written by a member of the Presentation order the biography draws on archival sources and congregational records to reconstruct the details of Nagle's life and work. Attention is given to the social and political conditions of 18th-century Ireland that shaped her mission including the position of Catholics under penal legislation and the broader landscape of poverty and deprivation. The book provides a thorough account of a figure whose pioneering work has gained renewed recognition in recent years with Nagle's cause for canonisation having been formally opened placing her legacy within ongoing discussions about Catholic social activism and the history of education in Ireland.
