He is identified as a Social Realist because of his interest in men and women viewed in contemporary settings which included the streets subways salons and artists' studios of New York City. Beginning in the early 1930s he showed regularly in the large annual and biennial American exhibitions of the Whitney Museum of American Art the Carnegie Institute the Art Institute of Chicago the Corcoran Gallery of Art the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. 1962réf. 007991New York: Crown Publishers Inc 1962. First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good Minus. Inscribed in ink by Soyer to we believe Lillian Halegua and also a folded greeting card featuring on the front cover a mounted color plate of a Soyer painting of two women and inside an inked Season's Greetings from Soyer and his wife Rebecca written by Rebecca probably -- the writing is different than the book inscription. 4to. 26 by 18 cm. 127 pp. With 43 b/w plates of Soyer's artwork from the trip. Plates included in the pagination. The sketches are sometimes very sketchy and loose renderings and other times completed or fully realized works of art. Subjects include artwork which made a strong impression on Soyer including some totemic artwork sights and views that captured his fancy and portraits of important artists and authors he met among them Balthus Carlo Levi Henry Moore and Alberto Moravia. The text is more or less a diary written in a breezy style and we think convey a certain appealing modesty by the artist who also could be quite bold in seeking introductions to figures he didn't previously know such as Moravia. The DJ survives with several edge chips and short closed tears especially along the upper edge. The book itself has no significant issues. Crown Publishers, Inc unknown

réf. 11921Soyer Raphael. Soyer Raphael American born Russia 1899-1987. BACKSTAGE. Cole 43 Gettings 43. Etching and drypoint c. 1937. Edition size not known but likely only about 25 according to Soyer as told to Gettings. Signed in pencil lower right and stamped "Federal Art Project/NYC WPA" lower left. 8 3/8 x 6 7/8 inches image 13 3/4 x 11 3/4 sheet. Thematically similar to the artist's lithograph "The Team" Cole 23 Gettings 42 but with the addition of the two figures at left the man in the doorway appears to be a self-portrait. Soyer commented to Gettings in 1982 "I think it is the only complete drypoint I ever made." Soyer did several prints under the auspices of the WPA's Federal Art Project all in small editions all now rare. In excellent condition. unknown

1937réf. 72521937. Soyer Raphael. Soyer Raphael. BEDTIME. Cole 54. Lithograph 1937. 18 x 10 1/4 inches; 457 x 260 mm. Total edition of 225 commissioned by Rabin & Kreuger Gallery Newark NJ a first edition of 75 was supplemented by a second edition of 150. Although Cole is silent about it it seems likely that the second edition was really a further printing done shortly after the first; he offers no indication that there is any variation between the two or any way to tell them apart. In the next year Soyer did his first lithograph for Associated American Artists "Protected" which is very similar to this image here the baby looks at the viewer from the mother's right shoulder; in "Protected" the baby is on the mother's left shoulder; the format for "Protected" is smaller. Bedtime is much less frequently seen than "Protected" a surprise given that the editions were apparently close in size. A fine impression of this large early print in excellent condition. unknown
