Jacket edge wear laminate starting jacket toned. 1967 Large Hardcover. 150 pp. German text. Includes tipped in color plates. Rembrandt born July 15 1606 Leiden Netherlands—died October 4 1669 Amsterdam Dutch Baroque painter and printmaker one of the greatest storytellers in the history of art possessing an exceptional ability to render people in their various moods and dramatic guises. Rembrandt is also known as a painter of light and shade and as an artist who favoured an uncompromising realism that would lead some critics to claim that he preferred ugliness to beauty. Early in his career and for some time Rembrandt painted mainly portraits. Although he continued to paint—and etch and occasionally draw—portraits throughout his career he did so less frequently over time. Roughly one-tenth of his painted and etched oeuvre consists of studies of his own face as well as more-formal self-portraits a fact that has led to much speculation. - Britannica Verlag M. 1859réf. 45229New York: Colton 1859. An Important American Artist's Print with Exhibition Ticket Large print of Rembrandt Peale's famous painting "The Court of Death" lithographed by Sarony Major & Knapp. Rembrandt Peale was the most accomplished son of the great American portrait painter Charles Willson Peale. The painting "The Court of Death" was the most ambitious of his works full 24 by 13 feet in size. Completed in 1820 it was displayed for a number of years at the Baltimore Peale Museum and then toured to other cities up through the time of the Civil War. By 1859 the painting had been sold to Gardiner Quincy Colton who published it in the present format and sold the prints for the low price of $1. Noted scholar Peter C. Marzio wrote: "Peale himself normally haughty and querulous provided a model of understated endorsement of the lithograph writing shortly before his death to Tristram Coffin on July 3 1860 'The drawing is correct and the Colouring considering the difficulty of the process & its cheapness gives a good general idea of the painting.'" Marzio further adds that this lithograph is among his favorites due to its importance in Peale's brilliant career not only as an artist but as a popularizer of art noting: "The painting is historically important as a very popular touring picture." This example is accompanied by a printed and illustrated receipt for the purchase of one print. The receipt "entitles the holder to an ownership of One Share in the original Painting valued at $25000; which will be disposed of as soon as 100000 Engravings are taken in such manner as they the associated owners shall determine." The receipt has a portrait of Peale on one end and of George Washington on the other. In a contemporary prospectus for the print the publisher touts the obvious truth that more profit could be made by selling 100000 prints at the low price of $1 than could be achieved by selling 5000 prints at $5. In addition to increasing his profit margins Colton clearly hoped to sell more prints based on the idea of buying into a share of the painting. A pair of items illustrating the distinct link between art and commerce. Chromolithographic print: 20 x 30 inches. Receipt: 3 x 7½ inches. Minor toning and soiling small tear at bottom edge. réf. 1410629Second and final state. Finely executed antique etching after the celebrated Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn depicting a richly detailed orientalist figural scene. The composition shows three robed figures in animated conversation beside an architectural archway rendered with the loose expressive linework and atmospheric shading that define Rembrandt's etching style. Particularly notable is the presence of the artist's signature "Rembrandt f." in the upper right appearing reversed-as expected in impressions taken directly from an etched plate. The print appears to be a later impression after the original 17th-century plate most likely dating to the 18th or 19th century. It is printed on wove paper and presented within an elegant and substantial period frame featuring richly figured wood veneer with ebonized beaded inner molding-an exceptional presentation that complements the refinement of the etching itself. Signed in reverse on plate. Accompanied by COA from Titus Fine Arts. Artwork measures ~4.3in. x 5.6in.; frame measures 19.5in. x 21.5in. Shelved at Dupont. 1410629. réf. 925Peale is best known for his presidential portraits of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. In this Autograph Letter Signed 8vo n.p. May 15 1857 Peale is likely writing to John Durand 1822-1908 painter and son of artist Asher B. Durand. John Durand co-founded a cultural and art periodical called "The Crayon" published from Jan 3 1855 to July 1861. Peale writes "After you left me this morning it occurred to me that possibly in your next number you would give a few words on the Exhibition here - In this case you might say that it contained nothing from my pencil & that I preferred to send a portrait my last work in my 80th Year to the New York Academy. which I have done - That of a Young Man." Nicely signed "Rembrandt Peale." The painting's title refers to his "Portrait of a Young Man." Peale had settled in Philadelphia by the time he wrote this letter and that city is likely the place to which he refers regarding the Exhibition. Earlier in the year of our letter 1857 Peale made prints that he called "Monochrome of Washington." When he lectured at the New York Historical Society on June 16 he displayed Washington portraits including a Monochrome decorated with cord and tassel. see journals at Penn State Univ. on line Peale painted his first portrait at the age of 17 of President George Washington in 1795. Over the course of his long and prolific career as portrait painter Peale would paint over 70 pictures of Washington portraits of President Thomas Jefferson as well as Chief Justice John Marshall. In addition to painting the Founding Fathers Peale created many portraits including the one referenced in our letter. Letters of Peale mentioning one of his works are particularly uncommon. Matted with bust length albumen print of the artist attached to a mat possibly not the original mat. Corners of the print are somewhat damaged image is somewhat faded. The portrait print of the artist matches the tone of Peale's letter and creates a handsome pairing. unknown books

2022réf. 214385Zwolle Netherlands: WBooks 2022. Hardcover. VG. White boards with color illustration on cover white text. 336 pp. Color and some bw illustrations. "This book follows the fortunes of a fascinating painting along two lines. First is the history of the painting as a precious collector's object a story almost too unlikely to be true. In 1823 it was bought by the future King Willem II as one of his first purchases for the greatest collection of paintings ever assembled by a Dutch individual. For nearly a hundred years it remained with his heirs coming to Weimar. Then in 1921 it was stolen from the Weimar Museum to turn up in 1945 in Dayton Ohio owned by a man who said he bought it in 1934 from a German sailor on the New York waterfront. What followed is revealed in this book for the first time based on declassified U.S. government information. In 1947 the U.S. government seized the Rembrandt under such strict terms that 20 years later when it wanted to return it to Germany it was forced to go into legislative and diplomatic gymnastics to do so. Upon its return an heir to the Weimar title sued for its restitution and after seven years of one trial after another she got it. She sold it in 1983 to the private collector who still owns it. Since 1921 it has been on public display only for 10 days in Dayton 1947 and 10 weeks in Washington 1967. The book also traces the critical history of the painting as a Rembrandt. In 1969 his authorship was disputed by Horst Gerson an opinion that was seconded by the Rembrandt Research Project. Examining all the evidence and arguments the eminent Rembrandt specialist Gary Schwartz comes to the conclusion that there is no reason not to accept the painting for what it looks like - a self-portrait of the great master painted by his own hand"--.
