1985réf. 26351AB1985. London Secker & Warburg 1985. 8°. VIII 517 pages. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket in protective collector's mylar. Minor foxing to the edges only. From the library of painter Keith Money. With his name on front free endpaper. Edgar Degas ; born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas 18341917 was a French artist famous for his work in painting sculpture printmaking and drawing. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism although he rejected the term and preferred to be called a realist. A superb draftsman he is especially identified with the subject of the dance and over half of his works depict dancers. These display his mastery in the depiction of movement as do his racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and depiction of human isolation. Early in his career he wanted to be a history painter a calling for which he was well prepared by his rigorous academic training and close study of classic art. In his early thirties he changed course and by bringing the traditional methods of a history painter to bear on contemporary subject matter he became a classical painter of modern life. 1946réf. 264Huit Sonnets is a posthumous collection of poetry by the French Impressionist artist Edgar Degas published in 1946 by Wittenborn and Company in association with La Jeune Parque in New York and Paris. Although Degas 1834–1917 was primarily known for his paintings and sculptures this volume revealed his literary efforts featuring eight sonnets accompanied by his own illustrations. The volume contains eight sonnets written by Degas edited with a preface by his relative Jean Nepveu Degas. True to his dual talent the book is illustrated with nineteen unpublished drawings by the artist himself. These illustrations include: · A self-portrait frontispiece. · Five plates outside the text. · Twelve drawings integrated within the text. The themes of the sonnets reflect motifs common in Degas's visual art including dancers horses and tributes to other figures demonstrating a thematic interconnection between his poetry and his famous paintings. This copy is in excellent condition. It has a softcover but it has been protected by glassine paper so the actual cover is in really good shape. The pages are clean and solid with no damage or wear.
