He started his apprenticeship in 1853 at the studio of Louis-Ernest Barrias and beginning in 1854 studied under Louis Lamothe who revered Ingres above all others and transmitted his adoration for this master to Edgar Degas. Starting in 1854 Degas frequently traveled to Italy where he copied from the Old Masters. His drawings and sketches already revealed very clear preferences especially in Raphael Leonardo da Vinci Michelangelo and Mantegna. After his first compositions which depicted horses Degas made yet another discovery. His first painting devoted solely to the ballet was Le Foyer de la danse à l’Opéra de la rue Le Peletier The Dancing Anteroom at the Opera on Rue Le Peletier Musée d’Orsay Paris. In a carefully constructed composition with groups of fi gures balancing one another to the left and the right each ballet dancer is involved in her own activity each moving in a separate manner from the others. Extended observation and an immense number of sketches were essential to executing such a task. Ballet would remain his passion until the end. . 2012. 1906981388 . Parkstone Press hardcover

He captured his young female subjects warming up practicing at the bar or mid-performance with a stunning immediacy and accuracy on canvas paper and in bronze. Although Degas did not consider himself part of the Impressionist movement he is often viewed in that context. This sumptuously illustrated book offers a new framework establishing Degas as a thoroughly modern artist who was engaged with and influenced by the then-new mediums of photography and film. Using drawings pastels paintings prints sculpture photographs taken by the artist and his contemporaries and samples of film from the period renowned Degas scholars Richard Kendall and Jill DeVonyar examine the artist’s innovative approach to the subject from his documentary mode of the early 1870s to the sensuous and expressive manner of his late work. . 2011. 1905711689 . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 328 pages. -- with a bonus offer--; As an artist Edgar Degas 1834-1917 defies easy description. Allied with the French impressionists through his commitment to portraying modern life he also took an independent course preferring line over color and the visible brushstroke and working in a studio instead of out-of-doors. He is perhaps best known as a painter but his most widely known work is a sculpture Little Dancer Aged Fourteen. Executed in wax near life-sized dressed in a ballerina's tutu with real ballet slippers and real hair the sculpture caused a sensation when it was exhibited in 1881. It is the only sculpture Degas ever showed publicly though more than one hundred--of dancers horses and bathers--were found in his studio after he died all dusty some fallen apart. For almost forty years after his death these works were known only through the bronzes his heirs had cast from the originals. Then in 1955 the waxes themselves appeared on the art market. Thanks to the discernment and generosity of Paul Mellon the majority are now preserved at the National Gallery of Art Washington most on permanent display. This groundbreaking volume honors this extraordinary gift by linking art and science. It brings together the insights of a distinguished art historian of nineteenth-century painting and sculpture and the specialized knowledge of National Gallery conservators and scientists who have published pioneering technical studies. Including essays on Degas' life and work his sculptural technique and materials and the story of the sculptures after his death it features art-historical and technical discussions of every work in the collection as well as indispensable concordances and bibliography. The richly illustrated text is intended for both art lover and specialist. Was Degas the sculptor technically inept or unusually inventive How do we understand his sculpture in light of his paintings prints and photographs These questions and many others are explored with originality and depth adding immeasurably to our understanding of the artistic avant-garde in the late nineteenth century and to our appreciation of this controversial artist. . 2010. 069114897X . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 264 pp. ; 257 illus. 251 in color. -- with a bonus offer--; The nude figure was critical to the art of Edgar Degas throughout his life and yet frequently his expansive body of work on this subject has been overshadowed by his celebrated portraits and dancers. Degas and the Nude is the first book in a generation to explore the artist's treatment of the nude from his early years in the 1850s and 1860s through his triumphs in the 1880s and 1890s all the way to his last decades when the theme dominated his artistic production in all media. With essays by leading American and French critics it provides a new interpretation of Degas' evolving conception of the nude situating it in the subject's broader context among his peers in nineteenth-century France. It explores how Degas exploited all of the body's expressive possibilities how his vision of the nude informed his notion of modernity and how he abandoned the classical or historical form in favor of a figure seen in her own time and setting--whether engaged in overtly carnal acts or just stepping out of an ordinary bath. More than 200 lushly rendered full-color images present a re-seeing of Degas' subject in paintings pastels drawings prints and sculpture. Among them are the most important of Degas' early paintings of nudes Scene of War in the Middle Ages which exerted a lifelong influence on the artist's treatment of the female nude and includes poses repeated throughout his career; monotypes of the late 1870s almost caricature-like in their imagery illustrating Degas' most explicitly sexual depictions of women in Parisian brothels; and a number of pictures portraying the daily life of women wherever they may reside. Together these iterations range over more than a half-century of genius achievement and present a groundbreaking look at the evolution of this master artist. . 2011. 0878467734 . Class gender power and agency are at stake in both arenas but they play themselves out in different ways via different pictorial languages. Degas's depictions of anonymous young female ballerinas at the Paris Opera reflect his fascination with the physical exertions and prosaic setting of the dancer's sexualized body. Unlike the standard Romantic depictions of the ballerina Degas's dancers are anonymous spread-legged workers on public display. Female portraiture and self-portraiture in contrast depicted the unique and the distinctive: privileged women self-assured individuals transgressing gender conventions. Focusing on Degas's representation of the dancer Tamar Garb examines the development of Degas's oeuvre from its early Realist documentary ambitions to the abstracted Symbolist renderings of the feminine as cypher in his later works. She argues that despite the apparent depletion of social significance and specificity Degas's later works remain deeply enmeshed in contemporary gendered ways of viewing and experiencing art and life. Garb also looks at the transformation in the genre of portraiture heralded by the "new woman" examining the historical expectations of female portraiture and demonstrating how these expectations are challenged by new notions of female autonomy and interiority. Women artists such as Anna Klumpke Rosa Bonheur and Anna Bilinska deployed the language of Realism in their own self-representation. The figure of femininity remained central to the personal political and pictorial imperatives of artists across the spectrum of modern aesthetics. Gender and genre intersect throughout this book to show how these categories mutually impact one another. . 2008. 0295987936 . University of Washington Press paperback
