2025réf. 199496Ciudad de Mexico: Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico 2025. First edition. Hardcover. New. 207p. color plates photos indices boards. The Institute of Aesthetic Research celebrates its ninetieth anniversary with a publication dedicated to the study of works by 90 female artists in Mexico. In this sense the volume does more than just celebrate; it aligns itself with the ongoing struggle of feminist art historians-both domestic and international-whose research analysis and critical inquiries have since the second half of the last century helped us understand the importance of telling our own stories. This is but one book among many possibilities concerning female artists who have practiced or currently practice their profession within our territory. It is a book in which the selection of artists and works was a collaborative effort reflecting the desires tastes and curiosity of all of us who contributed to it. As with any selection process many artists' names were inevitably left out; however the book presents a diverse array of works-chronologically thematically and materially-in which the category of "woman" is shown to require consideration in all its diversity transcending essentialist pigeonholing or homogenizing pretensions. Furthermore the scope of "Mexico" occasionally extends beyond the borders of the Rio Grande to encompass the work of Chicana artists whose contributions have had a significant impact on the evolution of contemporary art within the country.
