1898Best.-Nr. 14589AB1898. Paris F. Champenois 1898 85 : 135 cm. Original colour lithograph by Alphonse Mucha. Postcard of one of Mucha's most famous posters. Here reduced to postcard size but still very well to recognize. On the reverse side imprinted Postkarte - CARTE POSTALE -Post card. Union postale universelle and in 8 different languages. This is perhaps one of Mucha's best-known advertising poster. This poster established the iconic image of the 'Mucha woman' with her swirls of exaggeratedly abundant hair. 'JOB' is a trademark for the Joseph Badou Company manufacturing cigarette papers. In this poster Mucha placed the prominent female figure against a background featuring job monograms. Holding a lighted cigarette in her hand the woman leans her head backward sensually and rising smoke forms an arabesque interwining with her hair and the company logo. - Upper right edge a bit demaged the image perfect. unknown

1905Best.-Nr. 32205354to 10 ff; 52 monochrome illustrations of work by Mucha and 28 illustrations by other French Art Nouveau artists; in the original decorated wrappers. A very rare trade catalogue of mural panels and other graphic designs mainly by the famous Czech Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha 1860-1939 but also including a selection of works by other French artists such as Cossard and Sonrel. Many works offered here for sale have subsequently become icons of the French Art Nouveau movement. His lithographed panel sets of "Les Quatre Saisons" Les Fleurs "Les Heures du Jour" and "Les Arts" seem by today's standards almost absurdly cheap at between 30 and 40 francs each whilst smaller posters calendars and menu cards are even more modestly priced. The second part of the catalogue presents the works of 8 other French artists who interpret the vivid colours and flowing vegetative forms of Art Nouveau in a variety of ways. Those such as Cossard and Sonrel demonstrate the influence of Mucha's style which had been established in the first poster he made for the actress Sarah Bernardt in 1894. Others are more circumspect in their adoption of the style adhering more to the 'chocolate box' school of illustration. A rare catalogue valuable not only as a collection of Mucha's work but also as an indication of Continental popular taste in prints of the period. With the Dutch retailers stamp of C. L. Petersen on the upper cover. paperback

Best.-Nr. 73317Paris Librairie Central des Beaux Arts 1901. Folio 46 x 33 cm. Original print. = A beautiful print from Alphonse Mucha's quintessential Art Nouveau book Documents décoratifs. Alfons "Alphonse" Maria Mucha 1860-1939 was a Czech decorative artist who wanted to bring aesthetic values into arts and crafts. He invented the "Mucha Style" which soon became known as Art Nouveau. His work immediately became immensely popular and remained very sought-after ever since. This plate shows two sides of this gifted artist: his ability to produce fine images in lithography but also his practical design skills in this case for jewelry including pins and rings. Slight toning towards the edges; outer edge with some light creasing; a few tiny spots otherwise fine. Very rare especially in this good state. unknown

1899Best.-Nr. 10392AB1899. Prag Ceske Graficke Spolecnosti "Unie" n.d. ca.1899. 255 : 19 cm. 8 illustrated ornamental plates 7 plates and 7 calligraphed plates with ornaments by Alphonse Mucha. Colored illustrated original cloth. A in size reduced reproduction of this important work by Mucha 'Le Pater'. The original is one of the most outstandinding books of French Art Nouveau. J. Piazza Paris Avril 1898 41 x 56 cm une feuille Original black and white print with wide margins serving as the cover for the celebrated monthly publication L'Estampe Moderne. Entirely printed in black our print is the cover for the rare luxury volume binding with wide margins of the first year of publication. Artist's signature in the plate and deluxe edition number added in pencil. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe Moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. French collectors' interest in artistic posters increased at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie."" The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising purpose and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the luxury illustrated book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc.
