Bartlett Kerr on the half title page. DJ has some wear soiling and tears. Includes Foreword Chronology Maps and Prologue. Also includes Aftermath 1945-1984 The Far East--The United States as well as Acknowledgments Notes Sources Appendices and Index. The author was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was an infantry company commander during the Korean War where he was awarded the Silver Star. He subsequently served as a military assistance to the Army's chief historian. His father died as a prisoner of the Japanese in 1945. In 1977 he visited the sites of several of the larger POW camps in the Philippines and researched the voyage of the Japanese ship Oryoku Maru. This book is an objective account of the treatment of American POWs at the hands of the Japanese and the reasons for that treatment. The Japanese military tradition made no provision for honorable surrender. Consequently the Japanese had no idea what to do with the largest number of Americans ever to be captured by a foreign power. Asian rations were meager but those of the POWs were scarcer still. American prisoners were tested to the limits of their endurance and suffered psychological trauma even more debilitating than the physical. They were subjected to hunger cold thirst disease torture boredom loneliness and fear. William Morrow and Company, Inc hardcover
