1880rif. 1549This is an original 1880 edition that has been rebound for a library archive. It contains typical library markings and stamps. The binding is firm. Brown buckram boards with gold stamping on spine are lightly soiled and rubbed with some edge wear. The text is age tanned but appears clean and unmarked. Includes a history of the county and towns therein as well as hundreds of biographical sketches and many beautifully engraved tissue protected portraits of prominent citizens of the county. Binding very slightly cocked with the vellum soiled and front cover modestly so corners just worn through small four-line printed bookseller description with annotations laid down onto rear fly a very good copy. The text is fine. A novelization of Sherriff’s play one of 600 numbered copies Signed by both authors. Sherriff had been a young officer during WWI and upon his return to civilian life as an insurance clerk became interested in amateur theater. Journey’s End based on Sherriff’s letters to his family during the war was written as an amateur effort but at the suggestion of a friend he sent it to George Bernard Shaw who helped get it produced. The play a powerful and poignant antiwar story set in the trenches of WWI became a smash stage hit under the direction of James Whale who had himself been a POW. With the advent of talkies stage hits and stage professionals were suddenly in demand and Whale was imported to Hollywood to direct the film version. He followed his debut with several other stylish movies—notably his classic horror films—before retiring from films in 1941. The plot was reworked with an all-star cast in 1976 as Aces High. Sherriff also wrote or co-wrote screenplays for several other important films including The Old Dark House The Invisible Man both directed by Whale The Four Feathers and Odd Man Out. Collation: iv 170 pp. steel engravings with 74 images on 48 leaves. Some spotting and browning but overall fine .Quarter leather binding with marbled boards. Gold stamping on spine. Howes B-209; not in Sabin. A lovely book and excellent series of pictures to show how German speaking people viewed the United States in the 1850s. Considering the migration to America out of Europe during and after the Revolutions of 1848 these pictures would have inspired great hope to those who traveled. The steel engravings are taken from Bartlett's famous images first issued in American Scenery. This German language variation contain almost all the images found in George Virtue's London and New York editions of this book are reduced in size-some slightly but other when two or four are on one page are considerably reduced.
