There was a Royal Octavio edition of 250 also issued at the same time. Small stains in margins of several pages slight foxing has been rebound. John Russell Bartlett October 23 1805 - May 28 1886 was an American historian and linguist. Bartlett was born in Providence Rhode Island on October 23 1805. In 1819 he was a student at the Lowville Academy in Lowville New York which he attended for two years. Bartlett is known in the field of lexicography for his Dictionary of Americanisms 1848 a pioneering work that although supplanted by later dialect studies is still of value to students of language and remains a valuable contribution to the subject. Later editions were published in 1859 1860 and 1877. From 1855 to 1872 Bartlett was Secretary of State of Rhode Island and while serving in this capacity thoroughly re-arranged and classified the state records and prepared various bibliographies and compilations relating chiefly to the history of the state. In the later years of his life he became the librarian for the John Carter Brown Library and collated an exhaustive catalog of the collection that was published in four volumes. The American Civil War bibliography comprises books that deal in large part with the American Civil War. There are over 60000 books on the war with more appearing each month. Authors James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier stated in 2012 "No event in American history has been so thoroughly studied not merely by historians but by tens of thousands of other Americans who have made the war their hobby. Perhaps a hundred thousand books have been published about the Civil War." There is no complete bibliography to the war; the largest guide to books is more than 50 years old and lists over 6000 of the most valuable titles. Many specialized topics such as Abraham Lincoln women and medicine have their own lengthy bibliographies. The books on major campaigns typically contain their own specialized guides to the sources and literature. The most comprehensive guide to the historiography annotates over a thousand major titles with an emphasis on military topics. The compilation by John Russell Bartlett is notably the earliest and at the time most comprehensive catalogue and is notable for its inclusion of pamphlets along with books. réf. 0012267Bartlett Carroll New Hampshire Usa. Fair with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is a neat piece of New Hampshire history being the first minute book of Bartlett New Hampshires newly formed Order of the Kings Daughters and Sons Chapter. The book opens to handwritten details of what appear to be four affiliated chapters of the Order but the remainder of the minute book makes it clear that only Chapter No. 1 became operational. The date of organization for Chapter No. 1 whose circle name is the Union Helpers is Dec 10 1894. The Union Helpers inaugural leader is A. L. Russell Vice leaders is Mrs. Frank Burbank Jane A. Burbank b. 1857 Secretary is Mrs. Lydia Freeman Treasurer is Reverend A. M. Freeman and their line of work is set to be furnishing the church. Following the information on the chapters begins the Secretarys report of the first Union Helpers meeting written by Lydia Freeman who was elected at the meeting. This entry is undated but it was likely Dec 10 1894. Following that are minutes of the Union Helpers meetings which begin in January of 1895 and continue intermittently through 1900. While the chapter meets almost weekly with the exception of summer in 1895 the meetings taper off significantly in 1896 and beyond. It is clear by the 1900 minutes that the group is having a difficult time keeping up interest and membership. In total there are 33 numbered pages of minutes ending with the final recorded meeting on March 15 1900 signed by the treasurer at the time Rebecca Allan. Beginning on page 44 of the book is the Treasurers Report which is a ledger of money spent and received and provides even more insight into the activities of the Kings Daughters and the people involved. Again this ledger was kept consistently in the first year and then intermittently. One entry from the minute book is transcribed here: Circle met with Mrs. Allen. Leader being present read a Chapter from the Bible and Prayer was offered by Mr. Allen. Members present were Mrs. Russell Mrs. Adelaide Mead Mrs. Merry Mrs. Allen Mrs Burbank and one associate member Mrs. Martha Mead. Three new members were accepted and given the obligation by the Leader. They were Mr. Archibald Allen Mrs. Abbie Hall Mrs. Sarah Mead. Work was worsted and print patchwork and fancy work. Circle was invited to meet on the following Thursday with Mrs. John Eastman - Mrs. F. E. Burbank Secretary April 11 1895. This minute book is a treasure trove of genealogical information for the Bartlett New Hampshire region as well as an intimate look into the charitable work women took on in the 19th century. The organization is technically called the Order of the Kings Daughters and Sons and therefore the men are often named and involved as they attend meetings and contribute funds. This helps draw conclusions about relationships within Bartlett at the time. Note: There are dozens of Bartlett names contained within the minute book. Some of these include Frank E Burbank b. Sept 1853 Jane A Burbank b. March 1857 Adelaide Gray Mead 1840-1929 Rebecca J Allan b. 1847 Archibald Allan Arvesta S. Deering b. 1860 Abigail Drown Nute b. 1847 Daniel Nute b. 1843 Joseph Mead b. 1838 Gertrude Mead Merry b. 1871 Daniel Merry b. 1861 Walter Perkins R. W. Chandler Sarah Mead Abbie Hall Rufus Hall Delora Hanscom Flora Hall.and so many more! ! Minute book measures 8.5x6.5 inches. The hard covers are in fair condition with loosening and some ripping and significant signs of age and wear. The pages have loosened from the spine but remain intact. The book contains 91 lined pages in good condition. There 33 pages of handwritten minutes and 17 pages of ledger notes. Handwriting is legible. Overall Fair. BIO NOTES: Established in 1886 as a Protestant non-denominational group consisting primarily of women the Order of the King's Daughters and Sons distributed aid to the poor while raising awareness of their plight. The group experienced tremendous growth through the early part of the 20th Century inspiring the formation of numerous other women's charity groups. He group met in member's homes and the parsonage of the local church. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 50 pages; Signed by Author . hardcover
1953réf. 21222781953. Porthcothan Bay Padstow Cornwall: Darke-Johnson Ltd. For the author in London. 1953. Oblong 8vo. Original illustrated wrappers; pp. 24 profusely illustrated throughout by the author's brother; minimal spotting to wrappers otherwise very good with ownership inscription dated Newquay 1953 on initial blank. Newquay had been a destination for Britsh surfers since the 1930s.Scarce first edition first issue with the author's London address and not his later Rye Sussex address. The writer journalist and leftist politician is the author of this very early study on what he called 'surf riding'. He is well known as being the co-author of WW1 classic Journey's End and here took quite a left-field diversion. Bartlett exclaimed that you could use any kind of board even the landlady's tea-tray. He also dedicated a couple of pages to rubbish on the beaches and told its readers to dispose of their own waste. He finished by saying he was yet to find anything as exhilarating as surfing on the north Devon coast and that the older he got the more fun it was to do. unknown
1821réf. 0046721821. Hardcover. Leather spine. Good. A manuscript notebook with lovely original folk art oil paintings on both boards and two watercolors within! 4to. 30.5 by 19.5 cm. Unpaginated 18 leaves of wove paper with content followed by a few blanks. Watercolored title page with American eagle atop an orb and pedestal and a beautiful painting of ships bearing the American flag near a lighthouse perched on a rocky spit and a cape house beyond. The paintings on the boards are what strike us as the most unusual though especially because the medium is oils. One is of a windmill and a pastoral setting the other a cow drinking at a pond. Also a faint pencil sketch on the final leaf possibly a draft of one of the two cover paintings and elsewhere a tail vignette of a tombstone. The verse is not credited. The longest selection is "An abbreviation of the Shipwreck" which is in fact an abridged version of Falconer's narrative poem. Another "Epitaph on a Blacksmith" was written by Alexander Pennecuik. A poem entitled "Water" was penned by an Ann Taylor. We thus assume based on the title that most of the poetry was transcribed. The sea is the most common subject but by no means the exclusive one. The alum-tawed leather of the spine is heavily soiled. Repair of the sewing which binds the text block. Rubbing and minor loss on the cover panels. Darkening of the cover paintings. hardcover books

This is the first book to critically address and draw consequences from Badiou's claim that his work is a "Platonism of the multiple" and that philosophy today requires a "platonic gesture". Examining the relationship between Badiou and Plato Bartlett radically transforms our perception of Plato's philosophy and rethinks the central philosophical question: "what is education" . 2011. 0748643753 . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 170 pages. -- with a bonus offer--; The Wiles Lectures; How did people of the medieval period explain physical phenomena such as eclipses or the distribution of land and water on the globe What creatures did they think they might encounter: angels devils witches dogheaded people This fascinating book explores the ways in which medieval people categorized the world concentrating on the division between the natural and the supernatural and showing how the idea of the supernatural came to be invented in the Middle Ages. Robert Bartlett examines how theologians and others sought to draw lines between the natural the miraculous the marvelous and the monstrous and the many conceptual problems they encountered as they did so. The final chapter explores the extraordinary thought-world of Roger Bacon as a case study exemplifying these issues. By recovering the mentalities of medieval writers and thinkers the book raises the critical question of how we deal with beliefs we no longer share. . 2008. 0521702550 .
