1821Best.-Nr. 0046721821. Hardcover. Leather spine. Good. A manuscript notebook with lovely original folk art oil paintings on both boards and two watercolors within! 4to. 30.5 by 19.5 cm. Unpaginated 18 leaves of wove paper with content followed by a few blanks. Watercolored title page with American eagle atop an orb and pedestal and a beautiful painting of ships bearing the American flag near a lighthouse perched on a rocky spit and a cape house beyond. The paintings on the boards are what strike us as the most unusual though especially because the medium is oils. One is of a windmill and a pastoral setting the other a cow drinking at a pond. Also a faint pencil sketch on the final leaf possibly a draft of one of the two cover paintings and elsewhere a tail vignette of a tombstone. The verse is not credited. The longest selection is "An abbreviation of the Shipwreck" which is in fact an abridged version of Falconer's narrative poem. Another "Epitaph on a Blacksmith" was written by Alexander Pennecuik. A poem entitled "Water" was penned by an Ann Taylor. We thus assume based on the title that most of the poetry was transcribed. The sea is the most common subject but by no means the exclusive one. The alum-tawed leather of the spine is heavily soiled. Repair of the sewing which binds the text block. Rubbing and minor loss on the cover panels. Darkening of the cover paintings. hardcover

With steel-engraved vignette title-page in each volume 107 steel-engraved plates by Bartlett with blue-tinted tissue guards and a large folding map in volume 1. 4to very handsomely bound in fine contemporary three-quarter black morocco over marbled-paper covered boards the spines with raised bands elaborately gilt decorated lettered in gilt in two compartments. iv 2 188; 6 152 pp. A very handsome and very well preserved copy the binding in excellent state of preservation the text with essentially none of the usual foxing a couple of the plates a touch dusty at the blank portion of the plate otherwise the plates are very clean and bright essentially pristine and without the normal foxing in all an excellent copy. FIRST EDITION OF AN EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL WORK FILLED WITH PICTURESQUE STEEL ENGRAVED SCENES OF SWITZERLAND. William Bartlett traveled extensively throughout Europe and the East with his good friend Dr. Beattie and brought home over a thousand drawings. Eventually they were engraved and published into volumes with descriptive text by the latter. Here we find one of one of Bartlett's best works partly attributable to the magnificent scenery of the country described. Each engraving combines attention to detail subtle use of lighting and shade and romantic portrayal of the landscape. Scenes are rendered from virtually every corner of the country and include both natural and architectural compositions. The text focuses heavily on the history of each locale but also includes local customs sights and first hand travel impressions. A somewhat elusive title in the Bartlett oeuvre these illustrations of Switzerland are typical of his best and most famous work. George Virtue hardcover

American Scenery shows the principal American cities of the day including Baltimore Albany and Philadelphia and famous scenic vistas such as Niagara Falls and the Hudson Palisades. Most of the illustrations depict New York and New England with others of Virginia Maryland and Pennsylvania. Bartlett and Willis were introduced by their mutual friend Dr William Beattie. Bartlett had established a name for himself as a book artist through his illustrations of Europe and the Middle East. Willis had published a successful travel account of Europe titled Pencillings by the Way in 1835 and followed it in 1836 with Inklings of Adventure an account of the lands surrounding his home in Susquehanna. American Scenery was his first luxury illustrated publication. To achieve it Bartlett "spent a year in America during which time he visited Niagara stayed at Willis's home in the Susquehanna and together they toured Wyoming" Hunnisett p. 114.
