réf. 0012267Bartlett Carroll New Hampshire Usa. Fair with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is a neat piece of New Hampshire history being the first minute book of Bartlett New Hampshires newly formed Order of the Kings Daughters and Sons Chapter. The book opens to handwritten details of what appear to be four affiliated chapters of the Order but the remainder of the minute book makes it clear that only Chapter No. 1 became operational. The date of organization for Chapter No. 1 whose circle name is the Union Helpers is Dec 10 1894. The Union Helpers inaugural leader is A. L. Russell Vice leaders is Mrs. Frank Burbank Jane A. Burbank b. 1857 Secretary is Mrs. Lydia Freeman Treasurer is Reverend A. M. Freeman and their line of work is set to be furnishing the church. Following the information on the chapters begins the Secretarys report of the first Union Helpers meeting written by Lydia Freeman who was elected at the meeting. This entry is undated but it was likely Dec 10 1894. Following that are minutes of the Union Helpers meetings which begin in January of 1895 and continue intermittently through 1900. While the chapter meets almost weekly with the exception of summer in 1895 the meetings taper off significantly in 1896 and beyond. It is clear by the 1900 minutes that the group is having a difficult time keeping up interest and membership. In total there are 33 numbered pages of minutes ending with the final recorded meeting on March 15 1900 signed by the treasurer at the time Rebecca Allan. Beginning on page 44 of the book is the Treasurers Report which is a ledger of money spent and received and provides even more insight into the activities of the Kings Daughters and the people involved. Again this ledger was kept consistently in the first year and then intermittently. One entry from the minute book is transcribed here: Circle met with Mrs. Allen. Leader being present read a Chapter from the Bible and Prayer was offered by Mr. Allen. Members present were Mrs. Russell Mrs. Adelaide Mead Mrs. Merry Mrs. Allen Mrs Burbank and one associate member Mrs. Martha Mead. Three new members were accepted and given the obligation by the Leader. They were Mr. Archibald Allen Mrs. Abbie Hall Mrs. Sarah Mead. Work was worsted and print patchwork and fancy work. Circle was invited to meet on the following Thursday with Mrs. John Eastman - Mrs. F. E. Burbank Secretary April 11 1895. This minute book is a treasure trove of genealogical information for the Bartlett New Hampshire region as well as an intimate look into the charitable work women took on in the 19th century. The organization is technically called the Order of the Kings Daughters and Sons and therefore the men are often named and involved as they attend meetings and contribute funds. This helps draw conclusions about relationships within Bartlett at the time. Note: There are dozens of Bartlett names contained within the minute book. Some of these include Frank E Burbank b. Sept 1853 Jane A Burbank b. March 1857 Adelaide Gray Mead 1840-1929 Rebecca J Allan b. 1847 Archibald Allan Arvesta S. Deering b. 1860 Abigail Drown Nute b. 1847 Daniel Nute b. 1843 Joseph Mead b. 1838 Gertrude Mead Merry b. 1871 Daniel Merry b. 1861 Walter Perkins R. W. 1935réf. 0007026TULSA OKLAHOMA SOUTH WEST USA. Good. 1935. On offer is a rare and fascinating manuscript by a noted lawyer judge and historian in the United States. Dating from the 1930s this outstanding manuscript is typed on 8.5 inch by 11 inch pages and bound in a 3 inch 3-ring binder. It contains approximately 250 sheets of paper; 3 ring punched typed 1 side only. Included in the manuscript are 39 black and white illustrations. The binder is in good condition and the pages are all intact save for the title page which is loose. The manuscript is typed with handwritten editing changes noted on various pages. John Bartlett Meserve was a noted American lawyer. He was a member American and Oklahoma State bar associations the Oklahoma Society S.A.R. state president 1928 the Oklahoma State History Society director and the N.H. State History Society. Later in his career he was a judge serving in Tulsa Oklahoma. Outside of his distinguished legal career Meserve was a recognized historian who made significant contributions to the study of the history of the native people of southeastern United States - the Cherokee Creek Chickasaw Choctaw and Seminole peoples. His was a regular contributing author to the Chronicles of Oklahoma the official journal of the Oklahoma Historical Society. His is also a published author with a number of credits to his name - all revolving around the history of the "Five Tribes" of the U.S. southeast. This manuscript is a biography of notable leaders of the Cherokee and Creek people. It is organized into 19 separate chapters. His goals are laid out in the Foreword: The life stories of such Indian Chieftains are of historical significance; some of them were calm thoughtful and discerning leaders possessing an intelligence equal to if not above that of many of their white oppressors and rendered a service of sterling worth; some were indifferent; some were bad . Biography is said to be the alphabet of history. With that thought in mind a portrayal of the lives of these Indian leaders in the historic background in which they moved should mirror the emotions of these simple people. Their history becomes fossilized in the cold narration of facts. Foreword The first two chapters entitled Early Controversy and Lawless Days in the Indian Territory set the historical stage. Pagination of this manuscript restarts with each chapter. Once the stage is set he begins with 17 individual biographies of men whom he considers significant leaders within these two nations. Included in his list are Sequoyah John Ross William Potter Hoas Lewis Downing Charles Thompson Dennis Wolfe Bushyhead Joel Bryan Mayes Colonel Johnson Harris Samuel Houston Mayes Thomas Mitchell Buffington William Charles Rogers Opothleyahola The McIntosh Dynasty Samuel Chicote The Perrymans Iaparhecher and Pleasant Porter . The anglicized names reflect the long interaction between the Cherokee and Creek people and very early colonists and explorers. These men are very much full members of their respective Indian nations. Some of the Chapters were separately published as stand-alone articles in the Chronicles of Oklahoma. The chapters contain photographs of the subject of that chapter original buildings drawings and maps. There are 39 in total. There are many editing changes and notations. For a historian this is an absolute treasure trove. Meserve is a meticulous researcher bringing a trained legal eye for details to a task that he is obviously passionate about. Researchers keen to understand the history of these peoples will find a wealth of details within the manuscript which will shed light on a tumultuous time in the growth of the United States. It will certainly shed light on the foundations of issues that are of significant national interest to this day.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF COLONIAL CANADA BATTLE OF THE PLAINS OF ABRAHAM; SEVEN YEARS WAR; FRENCH INDIAN WARS; ELIPHELET COFFIN; GENERAL JAMES WOLFE; VICE-ADMIRAL CHARLES SAUNDERS; LOUIS-JOSEPH DE MONTCALM UPPER CANADA LOWER CANADA PRE REVOLUTIONARY WARS FRANCE VERSUS ENGLAND NORTH AMERICA PRE CONFEDERATION CANADIANA QUEBEC AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

1842réf. 027989New Bedford MA 1842. 2 page autographed Bifolium to James R. Williams April 20 1842. New Bedford MA: 1842. Dr. Lyman Bartlett was one of the leading physicians of New Bedford. He studied in Paris and took a liberal position when some physicians disparaged homeopathy. His view while conventional felt that it's major points ought to be considered by medical science. This letter is written to his friend James R. Williams in Constantine Michigan on behalf of his brother Edwin 1812-1903 who wanted a loan to establish a sheep business in Wisconsin. Dr. Bartlett lists nine serious questions as to the feasibility of his brother's proposed idea. He is concerned for the good of his brother and clearly is willing to help him financially. In an interesting aside he speaks of the concerns of the whale men in Massachusetts who fear the rise of land oil will end their profession. He notes the rising sickness contemporary accounts speak of lung disease thought to be tuberculosis. Finally he notes the economic issue and hopes for a new tariff undefined. In 1852 he was among the Medical examiners at Harvard's Anatomical Museum. Folded addressed and stamped New Bedford MA April 21 with partial wax red seal. unknown

Notes: Nathaniel Parker Willis 1806 – 1867 was an American author and editor who worked with several other noted American writers including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He was highly popular in his life and became the highest-paid magazine writer of his day. Willis embedded his own personality into his writing and addressed his readers personally specifically in his travel writings so that his reputation was built in part because of his character. Most contemporaries recognized how prolific he was as a writer and how much time he put into all of his writings. James Parton said of him: “Of all the literary men whom I have ever known N. P. Willis was the one who took the most pains with his work. It was no very uncommon thing for him to toil over a sentence for an hour; and I knew him one evening to write and rewrite a sentence for two hours before he had got it to his mind.” William Henry Bartlett 1809 – 1854 was a British artist recognized as one of the foremost illustrations of topography of his generation. Bartlett’s primary concern was to render “lively impressions of actual sights.” Nathaniel Parker Willis described Bartlett's talent thus: “Bartlett could select his point of view so as to bring prominently into his sketch the castle or the cathedral which history or antiquity had allowed.” Size: Quarto 280 x 220 mm Illustration: Very good example of this famous and early pictorial work on Canada.
