1992réf. 48610069414128Spectatorpers Serifpers and Klein Kapital 1992. 475 copies. Hardcover. Fine and initialed by Hartz. 5.625 × 8.5 inches. This one is a commemorative collection issued to mark the 80th birthday of the Dutch type designer and engraver Sem Hartz. The volume gathers Hartz’s reflections on his long career at the renowned Joh. Enschedé en Zonen foundry. It’s set in Hartz’s own Emergo typeface—a private sharp-serifed face he designed during WWII that was never commercially released. The essays provide a rare first-person glimpse into the technical world of steel engraving for banknotes and stamps as well as Hartz’s complicated professional relationship with his predecessor Jan van Krimpen. It is a tactile piece of printing history that serves as a bridge between the tradition of hand-cut punches and mid-century industrial production. Partly in Dutch but that’ll be no problem for your devices to decode. Fine and initialed by Hartz. Spectatorpers, Serifpers, and Klein Kapital hardcover
1914réf. 5732Paris: Imprimerie du Succes 1914. First edition. An attractive pochoir taken from "Le vrai et le faux chic" a book of caricatures by SEM published in 1914. This copy has been signed by SEM to the bottom right in pencil. We have put an example of the published pochoir in our photos here which shows that in the book the two lines had no signature above. Now framed in a black frame under glass and passe partout border. The lithograph is in very good condition with fractional handling and marking to it. The pass partout and clean are in excellent condition. Visible area of lithograph is 38cm x 29cm. The frame is 50cm x 40. Not examined out of frame. In "Le vrai et le faux chic" SEM sketches pre-war women's fashion and denounces 'the ridiculous aspect' of false chic pioneered by innovative couturiers who 'convey their unbridled fantasy'. He contrasts this with true chic characterised by "harmonious and discreet simplicity." SEM - Georges Goursat 1863–1934 was a French caricaturist famous during the Belle Époque. As well as the caricatures which made him famous he created work in a very different style as a correspondent during World War I. His later work was very influenced by the "Jazz Age" and high society in Paris during the 1920's. .

Overall 900 cm in length when opened. Slight wear at final fold. Overall very good condition. The French artist Sem Georges Goursat 1863-1934 built his reputation in Paris on his caricatures of prominent public figures. Born in Périgueux Sem worked in Bordeaux and Marseille before traveling to Paris for the 1900 Universal Exposition. The first work he published in the city was Le Turf a print album of instantly recognisable personalities at the racecourse. He began selling the album on the day of the prestigious Grand Prix race at Longchamp and his deft ability to capture the essence of his subjects made him a success. Even the people he caricatured in Le Turf wanted a copy and it quickly sold out. Sem revisited the subject of his first Parisian success in the Sem au Bois scroll. He drew the fashionable elite of France and their laughable hangers-on en route to Longchamp. The races were social events where central members of society were expected to put in an appearance. Sem adopted this obligatory parade down the Bois de Boulogne as an opportunity to gently mock the celebrities of his day caricaturing members of the aristocracy artists politicians and socialites. Although the individuals were not identified in the chromolithograph a weekly newspaper L'Illustration published a complete list of names in its October 5 1907 issue. The names have also been penciled in on the Gorman Rare Art Book Collection's copy of the scroll possibly by a previous owner who transferred the list from L'Illustration. Rare album conceived by Sem in collaboration with Auguste Roubille featuring a procession of carriages automobiles and other means of locomotion on which are represented the main personalities of the high society of the time such as King Leopold the Duke of Brissac the Prince of Arenberg the Baron and Baroness of Rothschild etc. as well as personalities from the literary and artistic world such as Henri Rochefort Polaire Mademoiselle Othero Willy Colette Robert de Montesquiou etc. travelling to the Bois de Boulogne horse races. At last.a copy identifying the characters. Very rare! Presumably listed by Sem who indeed features himself in the second carriage à la Hitchcock. Paris, [1908]. hardcover
