1992Best.-Nr. 48610069414128Spectatorpers Serifpers and Klein Kapital 1992. 475 copies. Hardcover. Fine and initialed by Hartz. 5.625 × 8.5 inches. This one is a commemorative collection issued to mark the 80th birthday of the Dutch type designer and engraver Sem Hartz. The volume gathers Hartz’s reflections on his long career at the renowned Joh. Enschedé en Zonen foundry. It’s set in Hartz’s own Emergo typeface—a private sharp-serifed face he designed during WWII that was never commercially released. The essays provide a rare first-person glimpse into the technical world of steel engraving for banknotes and stamps as well as Hartz’s complicated professional relationship with his predecessor Jan van Krimpen. It is a tactile piece of printing history that serves as a bridge between the tradition of hand-cut punches and mid-century industrial production. Partly in Dutch but that’ll be no problem for your devices to decode. Fine and initialed by Hartz. Spectatorpers, Serifpers, and Klein Kapital hardcover

In this lively album Sem illustrates pre war fashion with numerous illustrations of fashionable ladies in fashionable hats. Georges Goursat or SEM 18631934 was a very famous French artist of the beginning of the twentieth century the golden age of illustrated magazines and newspapers. He drew numerous caricatures of his contemporaries published in newspapers such as L'Illustration and Le Rire or in albums of his own. Attending fashionable events in casinos horse races and Parisian cabarets and restaurants he rubbed shoulders with the high society all the time which became his favorite subject of depiction. "Sem had a remarkable ability to capture the characteristic feature of the face rather than providing its likeness. His albums of Parisian life authentically reflect the physiognomy of the famous era of the 1900s" Benezit Benezit vol. 12 p.981. Succes, Paris, 1914 unknown
1910Best.-Nr. 74734Paris c. 1910. Georges Goursat 1863-1934 known as Sem attained a high level of success with his wonderful portrayals of Paris at the turn of the century. This outstanding caricaturist was a member of the Salon des Humoristes and an officer of the Legion of Honor. His works offer us glimpses into Parisian high society at the turn of the century. Sem's unique talent made his work very identifiable particularly because of the essential sobriety of his composition in which his characters usually emerge from a white or plain background rather than being more obvious caricatures. Sem captured the spirit of the subject and in turn produced images that were true to life. This beautiful print is a part of Album de Sem published in Paris c. 1910. Eugène Adam was the president of Société Sportive d'Encouragement. Lithograph. Printed colour. Size: 560 x 360 mm Fair condition. unknown
1876Best.-Nr. 94796Nice: D. Boistier & Fleuedelys Editeur. 1876. First editions of these attractive souvenirs featuring spirited renderings of the carnival procession at Nice in 1876. Both were clearly taken on the spot Giordano's perhaps being the more sophisticated and featuring identifications of some of the floats. These include the Floats of the Beetles and of the Rabbits the Float of Cosmography and the Float of the Kitchen turned Upside-down la Cuisine Renversée with a group of animals feasting on human flesh with a chef hanging in the meat-safe all of which feature in both panoramas. Details of both artists are elusive: neither is listed in Thiemme-Becker or Vollmer and Sem is often confused with the later and better-known caricaturist Georges Goursat who would have been just 13 at the time of publication. Frederick Sem seems to have made some sort of career as an artist-illustrator based in London catering to literary and theatrical circles Blake. Fragile and consequently highly ephemeral these panoramas offer an appealing evocation of the beginnings of the modern carnival in Nice. We locate the Bibliothèque nationale Française copy only of the first-named; the second is unrecorded. Both landscape octavo. Folding lithographic panorama to each 720 and 880 mm long respectively. Original pictorial paper wrappers. A little used a few minor chips and splits misfolds to the panoramas but overall very good.
