1919rif. 4741Paris 1919. A lovely hand coloured pochoir taken from the "Album Le Grand Monde à l'Envers." Second series Published in 1919. Sem published this album immediately after the war. When the creation of Income Tax had terrified the wealthy Sem had imagined the great and the good of this world reduced to small jobs each in his own speciality. In the Café de l'Opera two gentleman in evening dress perform "hunt the ball" tricks. Below is a large man beside his bicycle watching the beach. To the reverse a lady is renting out bathing costumes. There is also a man on a bike selling L'Avenir and a gentleman selling Le Gaulois. Nice print. The colours are bright. These pochoirs were printed with some colour and were hand finished. A good clean sheet slight marking only. 52 by 33 cm. A copy of this print is held in the wonderful Les Musées de la ville de Paris. Inventory: G.20661-1 SEM - Georges Goursat 1863–1934 was a French caricaturist famous during the Belle Époque. 52 x 33 cm. 1930rif. 21051Maxim's: Paris. Pillivuyt: Berry area France: Pillivuyt A. Simon Pillivuyt 1930. Fine. Humorous porcelain ashtray from the legendary Maxim's arguably the most famous restaurant in the world for much of the 20th century decorated with the funny caricature of a smiling hardworking coat check valet his arms draped with piles of furs his hands balancing a plethora of top hats and canes. Maxim's was a culinary monument to the Belle Epoque with its sumptuous Art Nouveau design and sensibility a scene Sem was closely associated with and Sem did many a memorable splashing illustration of the habitues of Maxim's as they wined dined and peacocked in the restaurant. N.d. circa 1930. Measuring 13.5 by 8.5 cm at the longest and widest. A. Simon is a French china wholesaler and retailer going back to the 1880s and still in business. It was and is particularly well-known as a supplier to hotels and restaurants. We believe that A. Simon actually acquired Pillivuyt in the 1940s and this might suggest a later date for the ashtray but it isn't dispositive. Still our earlier dating is certainly not something we can state with complete confidence. We can safely say the ashtray is mid-20th century however. Pillivuyt [A. Simon Pillivuyt] unknown

1914rif. 5732Paris: Imprimerie du Succes 1914. First edition. An attractive pochoir taken from "Le vrai et le faux chic" a book of caricatures by SEM published in 1914. This copy has been signed by SEM to the bottom right in pencil. We have put an example of the published pochoir in our photos here which shows that in the book the two lines had no signature above. Now framed in a black frame under glass and passe partout border. The lithograph is in very good condition with fractional handling and marking to it. The pass partout and clean are in excellent condition. Visible area of lithograph is 38cm x 29cm. The frame is 50cm x 40. Not examined out of frame. In "Le vrai et le faux chic" SEM sketches pre-war women's fashion and denounces 'the ridiculous aspect' of false chic pioneered by innovative couturiers who 'convey their unbridled fantasy'. He contrasts this with true chic characterised by "harmonious and discreet simplicity." SEM - Georges Goursat 1863–1934 was a French caricaturist famous during the Belle Époque. As well as the caricatures which made him famous he created work in a very different style as a correspondent during World War I. His later work was very influenced by the "Jazz Age" and high society in Paris during the 1920's. .
