1927réf. 4984Paris: Devambez 1927. A very nice copy of an etching by Chimot with a brief comment and initialled by him to the bottom edge. This was taken from the work "Le Belle de Nuit" by Maurice Magre. It was published in various states by Devambez. The 75 copies on Japon paper came with the illustrations in two suites / states. One was that as shown in the book the other was the proof copies with remarks by Chimot. In addition to the printed remark to the base this copy is also initialled in pencil. A nice impression heavily printed image. The backing paper has considerably darkened over time. It would seem that not all of the proof copies were signed. We attach to this listing a photograph of one of the Japon copies where the two states can be seen ours to the right but in this example there is no annotation or initial by Chimot. Engraving area is 21.5cm x 16cm. The sheet is 30.5cm x 23cm. . Devambez unknown

Édouard Chimot 1880-1959 was a French artist illustrator and editor whose career reached its peak in the 1920s in Paris through the publication of fine quality art-printed books. His own artistic work occupies a characteristic place and his editorial role was extremely important in bringing together some of the outstanding talents of that distinctive period in French art. A rare survival: Library Hub lists only 1 copy held institutionally at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Folio 325 x 248 mm. 23 full-page aquatint etchings in different states on 75 plates including the extra suite of 23 plates in two states some in bistre with remarques or in black; and 17 large in-text illustrations by Édouard Chimot.
