This was a hugely significant event for the subjects of the Empire radically altering the Byzantines' self-image and weakening their state for the later conflict with the Ottoman Turks. Using the theory of ethnicity - a comparatively recent tool with regard to the pre-modern era - Gill Page provides fresh insight into the late Byzantine period providing a corrective to nationalistic interpretations of the period of Frankish rule and more broadly to generally held assumptions of ethnic hostility in the period. A systematic analysis of texts in Greek from the period 1200-1420 from both ends of the social spectrum is backed up by an in-depth study of Frankish rule in the Peloponnese to reveal the trends in the development of Byzantine identity under the impact of the Franks. . 2008. 0521871816 . The authors begin by exploring how aspects of the primitive were invoked by rural artists' colonies formed in France and Germany at the end of the 19th century and by the work of the Fauves and the German Expressionists a few years later. The book then develops an analysis of Cubist works based on semiotic theory considering the social and cultural values encoded in such signifying systems and investigating the relationship between representation and ideology. The final chapter considers some problems of interpretation and evolution posed by specific examples of abstract art ranging from Malevich to Mondrian. . 1993. 0300055161 . FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- -- with a bonus offer--; In 1933 Paul Klee's work was branded as "Entartete Kunst" "Degenerate Art" by the National Socialists and he was dismissed from his professorial post at the Due sseldorf Academy of Fine Arts. This led him together with his wife Lily to return to his 'real home' of Bern. Here his avant-garde art was not understood and Klee found himself in unasked for isolation. In 1935 Klee started to suffer from a mysterious disease. The symptoms included changes to the skin and problems with the internal organs. In 1940 Paul Klee died but it was only 10 years after his death that the illness was actually given the name 'scleroderma' in a publication about Klee. However the diagnosis remained mere conjecture. Since his adolescence the dermatologist and venereologist Dr. Hans Suter has been fascinated by Paul Klee and his art and more than 30 years ago this fascination spurred him to commence research into the illness and its influence on the art of Paul Klee's final years. It was due to Dr. Suter's meticulous investigations that Klee's illness could be defined as 'diffuse systemic sclerosis'. In this book the author assembles his findings and describes the rare and complex disease in a clear and comprehensible way. Further he empathetically interprets more than 90 of Klee's late works. The point of view of a dermatologist renders a unique source of information. It provides on one hand new insights into everyday medical practices at the University of Bern in the 1930s which will fascinate doctors and local historians alike. While on the other hand art historians and art lovers will be absorbed by the newly discovered links between Paul Klee's work and his illness. . 2010. 3805593813 . S Karger Pub hardcover

FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request – – IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened - Inscribed & signed by Vickers. 255 pages. Book Description: Exciting and provocative in its argument this book challenges the widely held view that Greek pottery vases were objects of great value in antiquity commissioned by rich patrons from the greatest artists of the day. Instead they are shown to have been simply low cost versions of tablewareoriginally made in silver and gold. This book demonstrates how Greek pottery first came to be regarded as a high value commodity in the eighteenth century thanks to clever if not fraudulent sales techniques; it examines the primary sources both literary and epigraphic to find what materials theancients did consider to be important; and it explores the ways in which work in gold and silver influenced painted pottery. -- with a bonus offer-- . 1994. 0198132263 . He produced woodcuts with blocks taken from their own sketches and collaborated with Hilary Pepler to produce booklets of their work on St. Dominic’s Press”. Joanna later married the printer René Hague 1905-81 who had collaborated with her father in establishing the printing press Hague and Gill for which Eric Gill designed a range of typefaces.Gillian Jason Gallery ‘The Childhood Drawings of Joanna Gill’ exhibition catalogue no.33 Charming childhood illustration for The Lady of Shallott by Eric Gill’s daughter Joanna unknown

1865réf. 129583London: Published by Paul Jerrard & Son for the Proprietor Messrs. Newbold & Co 1865. Very Good. London Published by Paul Jerrard & Son for the Proprietor Messrs. Newbold & Co. after 1865. Two hand-coloured lithographs individually framed and glazed at a much later date matted just outside the printed border obscuring the series title and plate number above the upper border; visible image sizes approximately 210 × 260 mm; external dimensions 422 × 447 mm. Hand-colouring a little faded; light uneven tanning to the 'Bushrangers' plate; overall in excellent condition but not examined out of the frames. The complete series comprises twelve views of the Australian goldfields in the manner of S.T. Gill; the set 'was probably issued loose without any title or wrapper' Wantrup page 327. The two plates on offer are 'The Lost Bushman or The Unfortunate Digger That Never Returned' Number 2 and 'Bushrangers waiting for the Mails in New South Wales' Number 5. The title is printed beneath the image along with four lines of explanatory text; the 'Lost Bushman' plate also has an additional four lines of verse. Wantrup suggests a date of publication after the appearance of Gill's 'Australian Sketchbook' in 1865 due to the numerous similarities between the two works. Complete sets of this series and probably individual plates too are clearly rare: Wantrup refers to incomplete sets selling at auction in 1977 and 1982 and the only addition to the book auction records since then is the incomplete set in the 2008 Davidson Collection sale when 11 framed and glazed plates sold for $18640 against an estimate of $6000-8000.
