The bird activity it holds is diluted and disguised by the vast flat open land and sky that offers an impression of little going on. In January 2015 with an inkling of bird activity being more prominent than at first met my eyes I decided to try to pull them out of the sky. I set up an 8cm diameter stage in the form of a wooden pillar that was around one and half meters in height and opposite it another the same on which I mounted a camera that was triggered by motion. I visited the camera a few days later and to my surprise it had worked. The pillar somehow managed to funnel the birds from the sky by offering them a place to rest feed nurse their young and observe. I was captivated immediately. The images were often unsettled the birds awkward like contortionists completely off-beat and the shapes and soft lines created were so arresting. From my kitchen window the pillar could be seen in the distance like a matchstick in the flat distance. My absence in turn somehow allowed a greater mental presence during the making of the work. I was frequently there though only in my mind wondering what was happening at that very moment as I sat on a local train or went about my daily routine. Even when I was out of the country I would be imagining the activity on the stage. Please note the prints have been stored rolled so will be curled initially. " -Stephen Gill. One of 150 copies folio size 40 pp. Eric Gill 1882-1940 English sculptor typographer illustrator and printmaker is perhaps best known for his wood engravings; his work is characterised by sensual line work and elegant characters with a deep spirituality. This volume appears to be one of the first attempts to compile Gill's work in a single volume; however per Evan Gill's bibliography it "was prepared and published entirely without Gill's knowledge and consent." p. 162. As always seeing Gill's work with the depth and texture of an engraving is so very different from seeing an offset- or digitally-printed version; this work contains a wonderful selection of his early work with his talent already in its full glory. The work contains a total of thirty-eight of Gill's engravings including those done jointly with David Jones. Note that the list is given on the Contents page but does not call out that there are two engravings on the title page and four on p. 28. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full natural linen cloth over boards title page in red and black with two of the thirty-eight engravings a hand-made notation in the second sentence of the title which apparently was made to all copies as other online listings have the same correction noted limitation statement following the title page issued in an edition of 150 copies this no. 83 each engraving on the rectos only vintage bookseller ticket on the rear pastedown Phillip C.
