Statement from Stephen Gill found online: ""Photography birds animals all merged for me as a teenager as I was fascinated with those things. I spent much time photographing birds when I in English basically captionswas around 13 years old sitting patiently waiting for a bird to land in a spot where I had placed food and carefully set up my Dixons Miranda camera and long air cable release running into the kitchen. Through photography and with the help of the Observer's book of birds I got to know the different species that visited our garden. About 20 years later after spending more time making work inspired by cities mostly East London I decided to re visit the subject of birds. This time in the city and built up areas. I wanted to make a study of how birds fit and mould their lives around ours and adapt to what we have created. I was also very interested to hear that scientists found that birds in towns and cities sing louder or use higher frequencies compared to the same rural species so they can be heard above the man-made noise."". Hardcover no dust-jacket as issued. 78 pages. 9.4" x 12.2" x 0.7". ISBN 9780955657702. "These betting slips were discarded in and around many betting shops 71 at the time of publication in the borough of Hackney in north-east London. The average number of betting shops in other London boroughs is 23. Each of these papers began as hope were shaped by loss or defeat then cast aside. These new forms perhaps now possess a state of mind shaped by nervous tension and grief. After these images were made little autopsies were performed on the papers to reveal the failed bets held within. If betting shops move into places previously occupied by banks or solicitors they are classed as financial services and don't have to apply for any special permit. In such numbers they are beginning to feel like a burden around a borough that is trying to improve itself and the lives of its residents and to shake off its bad reputation. To exhibit this book remove the book block from the outer cover expand the pages and hang from nails or small hooks using the holes provided. First edition available with three different covers this copy is the 'blue' cover as shown" -Publisher's text. 2006réf. 2026Signed by Stephen Gill. Condition: As New with previous owner's blindstamp on front endpaper. First edition numbered 487 of 750 copies. Hardcover no dust-jacket as issued in an illustrated slipcase. 32 pages. ISBN 9780954940546. "The photographs in this book were taken in Hackney Wick and later buried there. The amount of time the images were left underground varied depending on the amount of rainfall. The depths that pictures were buried at also varied as did their positioning. Sometimes they were facing each other sometimes back to back or sometimes buried singly. Not knowing what an image would look like once it was dug up introduced an element of chance and surprise that I found appealing. This feeling of letting go and collaborating with place - allowing it also to work on putting the finishing touches to a picture - felt fair. Maybe the spirit of the place can also make its mark." -Stephen Gill. USA customers please note: We only ship our books via USPS Media Mail with insurance & tracking. 2005réf. D5-83FS-CBS32005 Chris Boot hardcover edition. Unread copy still shrinkwrapped. From the cover: This is photographer Stephen Gill's guide to his world of objects scenes and the things we do - so familiar and obvious they fall below the usual threshold of people's attention. Producing series of images in and around London since 1999 - cash points lost people the back of advertising billboards and people gazing vacantly out of the window on the London-Southend train - Gill's scrutiny of the visual details of the everyday combines formal rigour with empathy towards his human subjects. Eight series are included in Gill's original first book with his text observations and an introduction by Jon Ronson. Chris Boot hardcover
