1949Best.-Nr. 118739194961. For the architect of Jerusalem's Rockefeller Museum First edition of From the Jerusalem Diary number 234 of 300 copies the dedication copy for Austen St Barbe Harrison 1891-1976 architect of Jerusalem's Rockefeller Museum and a friend of Eric Gill. Gill's widow and editor Mary Gill inscribed it "To Austen St B. Harrison with happy memories from M.E.G." The copy bears Harrison's bookplate designed by Gill. Gill worked with Harrison on the museum in 1934 when he was commissioned to carve ten courtyard reliefs a fountain and inscriptions in English Arabic and Hebrew. The reliefs represent the civilizations that shaped Palestine's history. Edited from Gill's diary and published posthumously in 1953 the volume reproduces his carvings in ten photogravures. Linotype & Machinery printed it privately partly to demonstrate Gill's Pilgrim typeface. Accompanying it are two copies of the earlier From the Palestine Diary printed by René Hague for the Harvill Press in 1949 but never formally published. Following the press's financial collapse bookseller G. F. Sims acquired the surviving sheets and had them bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. One copy includes cancel title pages dated 1951 and 1952. In letters to Harrison in 1959 Gill's son-in-law Denis Tegetmeier explains that this was a separate venture from the Linotype edition abandoned before its illustrations or binding could be completed. Two illustrated Christmas cards and letters from Mary Gill and her daughter Joanna Hague add a personal dimension. In December 1960 Mary reflects on the noise and commercialism of the modern world exclaiming "I know Eric would have hated it!" Joanna wrote in July 1961 to tell Harrison of her mother's death explaining her difficulty tracing his address and observing "I don't think he knew what a close friend you were".
