1899réf. 7463Paris: Librairie Borel 1899. First illustrated edition. Softcover. g. Octavo. 188 pp. Original decorative glassine over illustrated wrappers with blue lettering on front cover. Frontispiece. Illustrated title page. One of the great novels about obsessive love "La Femme et le Pantin" The Woman and The Puppet was first published in 1898 by Mercure de France and is considered Louys' masterpiece. It has inspired five film versions including von Sternberg's in 1935 and Bunuel's in 1977. This novel - which drew some of its inspiration from Bizet's Carmen as well as a particular episode in Casanova's Memoirs - is a distillation of decadent themes that holds good from one fin-de-siecle to another a cautionary tale whose title acknowledges that for a woman to be fatale requires the complicity of a male puppet. The novel opens during the boisterous Seville Carnival of 1896 during which André Stevenol an amorously-inclined young Frenchman succeeds in attracting the attention of the alluring Concha Perez. A rendezvous is arranged but before it can take place André meets Don Mateo who in a long monologue recounts his affair with Concha and seeks to dissuade the younger man from becoming embroiled with the 'worst of women' who had teased ridiculed and humiliated him. First illustrated edition with plates in two states the second suite printed in red. Illustrations by A. Calbet and J. Dodina 15 headpieces 13 tailpieces and 15 full-page plates. 1897réf. 73956Paris: Imprimerie Champenoispour CH. MassonH. Piazza 1897. Fine. Imprimerie Champenois pour CH. Masson H. Piazza Paris Septembre 1897 22 x 36 cm une feuille et une serpente Rare original color lithograph executed by Antoine Calbet for L'Estampe Moderne series number 5 published in September 1897. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in the lower margin numbered stamp of the deluxe edition on the verso; engraving preceded by a tissue guard captioned with the artist's name title and a poem by Henri de Régnier; and another blank tissue guard. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created especially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Epoque. Each issue of four prints was published in 2000 copies sold at 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print in a handsome format is superbly printed in colors on the most prestigious of papers: Japan paper. Thick silky satiny and pearlescent it contributes to making each page a complete work in itself. Its quality of ink absorption and its affinity with colors also make it the ideal support for these very beautiful lithographs. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters intensified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie."" The poster originally popular and pasted on the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising purpose and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the deluxe illustrated book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the time: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. Handsome copy in Belle époque style. Provenance: Inscribed by the author on the half-title to Lady Maxwell Scott: "À Lady Maxwell Scott avec les hommages respectueux de Henry de Régnier." Previous owner's tag pasted into first free flyleaf: A. Constable Maxwell Chateau Vallamand Vaud 1581 Suisse. Carteret IV 335; BNF41677132. An elegant large-format edition of Henri de Régnier's La Pécheresse richly illustrated by the French academic painter and illustrator Antoine Calbet. Printed on heavy vélin d'Arches the volume combines 20 color plates reproduced from Calbet's pencil drawings-including numerous sensual nudes-with ornamental woodcuts at the chapter openings and endings all presented with the spacious typography characteristic of the Grands Livres du XXème Siècle series. The copy is particularly distinguished by its presentation inscription from Régnier to Lady Maxwell Scott Marie-Louise St. Paul de Sincay Logan 1888-1969 an American-born Francophile who married Major-General Sir Walter Maxwell Scott a descendant of Sir Walter Scott and owner of Abbotsford in 1928. Her connections to French literary and artistic circles make the presentation of this lavish French literary volume especially apt. The earlier ownership label for A. Constable Maxwell Château Vallamand Vaud further connects the copy to the Maxwell family. Henri de Régnier 1864-1936 was one of the leading French Symbolist poets of the late 19th and early 20th centuries closely associated with the literary circles of the Symbolist movement. He was elected to the Académie Française in 1911. Antoine Calbet 1860-1942 was a painter illustrator and engraver associated with the academic tradition of the French Third Republic. He produced illustrations for numerous literary works as well as major decorative commissions including the celebrated murals of the restaurant Le Train Bleu at the Gare de Lyon in Paris. The handsome three-quarter red morocco binding with its floral gilt compartments marbled boards and gilt dentelles complements the sumptuous production of the edition.
