1916Best.-Nr. 3398Paris: D'Alignan Editeur; A. Vernant & E. Dolle Imprimeurs 1916. First Edition One of 400 sets printed on velin. All in Very Good to Fine Condition/Title and publisher label from the original folio have been preserved on the cover of a new wrap. Now preserved in an attractive matching clam shell of brown and beige marbled paper. Uncommonly found complete set as issued with all eighteen 18 lithos each is signed by the artist in pencil. Too often individual lithos have been seperated from the set for individual sale making complete copies quite rare. 3 3/4" x 5 1/4" lithographs on velin tipped on to 7" x 9" sheets. Croquis de Temps de Guerre "Sketches from Wartime" is Steinlen's major World War I print portfolio. The scenes depicted take place between 1914 and 1916 and are the head and torso studies from his larger series on Serbian refugees. Included is an upper torso preliminary of the most famous of these "La Poilue". D'Alignan was the director of the "La Guerre editions" and exclusive publisher of Steilen's work between 1915 and 1919. Steinlen was well known for his sympathetic eye in depicting the miseries of war. One can discern even from these small poignant drawings of face and torsos the suffering and burdens of war on especially the mothers and children. This was originally intended to be a series of four albums alas this is the first and only one published. Theoophile Steilen 1859 - 1923 was born in Switzerland. He initially studied Theology in Lausanne a precursor to his humanitarian sentiments as well as being a commited socialist and anarchist. He moved to Paris and in 1883 became part of the bohemian collective of Monmartre along with Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Emil Zola. He was the primary illustrator of song books for Aristide Bruant and served as the resident illustrator for the magazine "Chat Noir". When not creating art the crew often gathered at the cabaret of the same name. HIs enduring best know creation is the "Tournee du Chat Noir" poster the iconic black cat advertising the cabaret which remains one of the most reproduced images in poster history. "Tout vient du peuple tout sort du peuple et nous ne sommes que ses porte-voix. Everything comes from the people everything comes out of the people and we are merely its mouthpieces." - T. A. Steinlen. D'Alignan, Editeur; A. Vernant & E. Dolle, Imprimeurs unknown

1916Best.-Nr. 261491Paris 1916. Original poster. Lithograph. 47 x 31.25 inches. A celebration of Franco-Serbian solidarity this compelling World War I poster shows a French infantryman leading a group of Serb civilians and soldiers as they head across a bare winter landscape. The leading Serb soldier has his hand on the Frenchman's shoulder. Allied to the Entente Powers Serbia had been overwhelmed by the vastly superior numbers of Central Powers forces and after defeat at the Battle of Kosovo at the end of 1915 the Serbian Army was forced out of their home territory and fled into Albania. Thousands of Serbs died of cold and starvation during the following winter. Kosovo had been the sight of an historic Serbian defeat at the hands of the Ottomans in 1389 which led to the loss of Serbian independence and became a symbol of Serb nationalism. 'Serbia Day' 1916 was organized in Paris to benefit the displaced Serbs and was celebrated in June to coincide with the approximate date of that medieval battle. Théophile Alexandre Steinlen 1859-1923 frequently referred to as just Steinlen was a Swiss-born Art Nouveau painter and printmaker best known for his 'Chat Noir' advertisements for the cabaret of the same name. The poster is laid on linen and in good condition. A scarce item. unknown books

1898Best.-Nr. 75859Paris: Imprimerie Champenoispour CH. MassonH. Piazza 1898. Fine. Imprimerie Champenois pour CH. Masson H. Piazza Paris Juin 1898 19.50 x 36 cm une feuille Rare original lithograph executed by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen for L'Estampe Moderne series number 14 published in June 1898. One of 50 deluxe copies printed on Japan paper with wide margins artist's signature and date in the plate publisher's dry stamp depicting a child's profile in the lower margin with the numbered stamp of the deluxe issue on verso some foxing. Lithograph inspired by an extract from Germinie Lacerteux by the Goncourts. A magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of previously unpublished chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Epoque. Each delivery of four prints was issued in 2000 copies sold at 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe issue: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too inconsistent owes its reputation not to its own beauty but to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft together is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful impression. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. French collectors' interest in artistic posters intensified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomania."" The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and devoted to preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising purpose and elevate it to the rank of a work of art in its own right on the same level as the luxury illustrated book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. A handsome copy.
