1980ref. 37718New York: Dover Publications 1980. 4to 31 cm 12.25". 7 119 1 pp.; illus. From the publisher's note: ". . . The artist most closely associated with Gil Blas Illustré with most of the covers to his credit and with contributions appearing between July 5 1891 the second numbered issue and December 28 1900 was Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen. It is for the sake of the Steinlen covers and song illustrations that copies of Gil Blas Illustré are still avidly collected and it was during his years on that magazine that Steinlen attained the peak of his form. The name of one instantly recalls the name of the other. In pictorial wrappers; lightly age-toned. Both hinges cracked faint foxing to front endpapers. Dover Publications unknown books

The first 15 plates mounted on the back of the latter 15 some minor spotting and light creasing folding concertina-style into modern marbled boards. Bound without wrappers. extensive panoramic scroll of this once-in-a-generation wine festival original hand-coloured lithograph on 30 plates conjoined. each plate aprox. 185 x 500 mm. 7 1/4 x 19 3/4 in. An impressively large panorama running over 14 meters in total. The fête of 1833 was held over two days in August involving nearly 800 participants pulling numerous floats and was organized by David Constantin and Steinlen. In the present day the Swiss fête is organized by the Confrérie des Vignerons Brotherhood of Winegrowers and while they are free to choose how often the festival takes place it can only happen five times each century. The next Fête des Vignerons was held in July 2019 There were two showings with tickets costing between one and three francs each. The vignerons Jean-Louis Blanchoud and the Lécheyres brothers were crowned. A further thirty-two vignerons also received awards. This scroll depicts the actual participants in the procession wearing costumes also designed by Steinlen. Many of the floats are symbolic and represent the seasons or Bacchus but many of them show the actual tools of the trade such as a display of barrel making various crop management tools and even a large wine press. The final image is that of Noah's ark as Noah is considered to be the first vigneron. This publication is one a number of illustrative depictions of the 1833 Fête Simon lists three alone in Bibliotheca Gastronomica. 1916ref. 261491Paris 1916. Original poster. Lithograph. 47 x 31.25 inches. A celebration of Franco-Serbian solidarity this compelling World War I poster shows a French infantryman leading a group of Serb civilians and soldiers as they head across a bare winter landscape. The leading Serb soldier has his hand on the Frenchman's shoulder. Allied to the Entente Powers Serbia had been overwhelmed by the vastly superior numbers of Central Powers forces and after defeat at the Battle of Kosovo at the end of 1915 the Serbian Army was forced out of their home territory and fled into Albania. Thousands of Serbs died of cold and starvation during the following winter. Kosovo had been the sight of an historic Serbian defeat at the hands of the Ottomans in 1389 which led to the loss of Serbian independence and became a symbol of Serb nationalism. 'Serbia Day' 1916 was organized in Paris to benefit the displaced Serbs and was celebrated in June to coincide with the approximate date of that medieval battle. Théophile Alexandre Steinlen 1859-1923 frequently referred to as just Steinlen was a Swiss-born Art Nouveau painter and printmaker best known for his 'Chat Noir' advertisements for the cabaret of the same name. The poster is laid on linen and in good condition. A scarce item. unknown books
