1893ref. 1414203Paris: Les Maitres del'Affiche 1893. In Very Good condition. Artwork measures 6.5 in. x 14.75 in. Matted in border measuring 18 in. x 14 in. Shelved at Rockville PS1101. Created by the father of poster art Jules Chéret during Paris's Belle Époque the Maîtres de l'Affiche series "Master of the Poster" was meant to provide the public with accessible displayable versions of large advertisement posters. Since posters of the time were often very large sometimes five to eight feet and printed on cheap paper not meant to last Chéret designed a series of lithographs printed on high quality paper at a size displayable in the layperson's home. The original collection was released as a series of monthly publications delivered to subscribers over a sixty month period. The posters were published four at a time with sixteen 'bonus' posters added periodically over the years. 1414203. Special Collections - Upstairs. Les Maitres del'Affiche unknown books
1916ref. 21547Paris: Imprimerie Devambez 1916. Very Good Plus. Large French patriotic anti-Boche poster with somewhat humorous allegorical caricature illustration by Willette. The illustration which has some tenebrous color shows an irate Bacchus between a contented Frenchman holding up a glass of wine and a cowering German soldier. The Journee de l'Herault was a one-time special event during the First World War to raise money for war victims and other charitable causes of the department of Herault located on the Mediterranean and whose capital is Montpelier. The poster with frame is 120 by 86 cm. Visible the poster is 113 by 79 cm. The poster has minor creasing and waviness. The few short closed tears along its edges are basically moot issues thanks to the framing. The frame has spots of rubbing and wear but remains handsome and serves the poster well we think. Most of the area's 20000 seasonal workers came to pick potatoes in Monmouth County New Jersey in July after working in Florida in the spring and early summer. The present work is mostly comprised of the story of the cultural center written by Lenora B. Willette one of the center's earliest supporters. 1959ref. 8701Elizabeth New Jersey/Cleveland Ohio: Elizabeth Printing Service/National Consumers Committee for Research and Education Inc 1959. Very good . 9” x 6”. Stapled wrappers. pp. Very good plus: minimal wear and light toning. This book tells the story of the Freehold New Jersey center for migratory farm workers and their families. It's notable because its author and illustrator were both African American women. Per the introduction the author Lenora B. Willette was “a Southerner by birth and she first became interested in the plight of the migrants displaced from the plantations through the mechanization of cotton. Active in civic affairs and in the Consumers League of New Jersey she worked to secure the Migrant Labor Law and was appointed one of the five public members to the first Board by Governor Walter E. Edge. She was chosen to make a study of migrant education in the southern and western states as the official representative of the State. Her recommendations were used as a guide in setting up a school of education for children—the Freehold Summer School for Migrant Children; the first of its kind in the nation.” Willette was the also the president of the New Jersey State Federation of Colored Women's Clubs. The artist was presumably Lenora's sister Naida Willette Page who contributed the cover art as well as two full page internal illustrations. Naida Willette Page initially studied engineering at Howard University before making national news in 1950 as the first African American to be trained at Johns Hopkins for medical illustration. She graduated from Johns Hopkins in 1951 later worked as the Howard University College of Medicine medical illustrator and was the Art Director for the Journal of the National Medical Association where she often illustrated the covers that featured historic Black doctors. Several sources state that she's considered the first African American medical illustrator. A terrific combination of female author and illustrator. OCLC locates 8 copies over two entries. This issue is devoted to the sketches and pastel watercolors of artist Willette who is incensed by the British indifference to the peoples they have colonized and the mass murder by guns and starvation of those peoples. Cover painting indicts France as well. Willette is masterful and his nudes need no raison d'etre as many are wasted with hunger.
