réf. 5447France: S.P. S.D. Reprint. A limited edition 26/250 His 1 May 1915 illustration in Fantasio depicts a poignant wartime theme: "Living beautiful and dying by releasing a beautiful soul" featuring motifs of war casualties from the 1914-1918 conflict. This is not a page from the magazine it was printed as a poster and is printed later and numbered in pencil - but with no printer or publisher details. Fantasio was a First World War satirical magazine launched in August 1906 by Félix Juven. The only record of this print we can find is for the auction record of this copy. There is a little edgewear to the extensive margin but this could be easily hidden in framing. A lovely piece. Image area is 26.5cm x 41.5cm. The sheet is 41.5cm x 59cm. Blank to verso. Adolphe Willette 1857-1926 stands as a prominent figure among the bohemian artists of fin-de-siècle Montmartre renowned for his contributions as painter illustrator caricaturist and lithographer. He is today particularly remembered for his caricatures from the first world war. . 1896réf. 25811896 Rare.
1916réf. 21547Paris: Imprimerie Devambez 1916. Very Good Plus. Large French patriotic anti-Boche poster with somewhat humorous allegorical caricature illustration by Willette. The illustration which has some tenebrous color shows an irate Bacchus between a contented Frenchman holding up a glass of wine and a cowering German soldier. The Journee de l'Herault was a one-time special event during the First World War to raise money for war victims and other charitable causes of the department of Herault located on the Mediterranean and whose capital is Montpelier. The poster with frame is 120 by 86 cm. Visible the poster is 113 by 79 cm. The poster has minor creasing and waviness. The few short closed tears along its edges are basically moot issues thanks to the framing. The frame has spots of rubbing and wear but remains handsome and serves the poster well we think.
