1893rif. 1414203Paris: Les Maitres del'Affiche 1893. In Very Good condition. Artwork measures 6.5 in. x 14.75 in. Matted in border measuring 18 in. x 14 in. Shelved at Rockville PS1101. Created by the father of poster art Jules Chéret during Paris's Belle Époque the Maîtres de l'Affiche series "Master of the Poster" was meant to provide the public with accessible displayable versions of large advertisement posters. Since posters of the time were often very large sometimes five to eight feet and printed on cheap paper not meant to last Chéret designed a series of lithographs printed on high quality paper at a size displayable in the layperson's home. The original collection was released as a series of monthly publications delivered to subscribers over a sixty month period. The posters were published four at a time with sixteen 'bonus' posters added periodically over the years. 1414203. Special Collections - Upstairs. Les Maitres del'Affiche unknown

rif. 5447France: S.P. S.D. Reprint. A limited edition 26/250 His 1 May 1915 illustration in Fantasio depicts a poignant wartime theme: "Living beautiful and dying by releasing a beautiful soul" featuring motifs of war casualties from the 1914-1918 conflict. This is not a page from the magazine it was printed as a poster and is printed later and numbered in pencil - but with no printer or publisher details. Fantasio was a First World War satirical magazine launched in August 1906 by Félix Juven. The only record of this print we can find is for the auction record of this copy. There is a little edgewear to the extensive margin but this could be easily hidden in framing. A lovely piece. Image area is 26.5cm x 41.5cm. The sheet is 41.5cm x 59cm. Blank to verso. Adolphe Willette 1857-1926 stands as a prominent figure among the bohemian artists of fin-de-siècle Montmartre renowned for his contributions as painter illustrator caricaturist and lithographer. He is today particularly remembered for his caricatures from the first world war. . S.P. unknown
