1910réf. 030164United States 1910. Collection of over 90 images of various sizes and taken by several photographic studios mostly 8" x 10"; some smaller professional shots and a few candid snapshot images. Mostly these are professional portraits of Iva Shepard in various poses costumes & roles during her acting career and include several dramatic film studio stills. Most of her work took place 1910 - 1918 in the silent era; several sources note appearances in over 60 films during that period. A few small television parts when she resurfaced in 1955 are noted in the performance lists. The collection here is solely from the earlier career and with a few promotional images printed later. Biographical data is scarce. There is a wiki and IMDB lists her parts in many productions along with the information she'd been twice married to actors Joseph Singleton and Lyle Clement. About twenty of the photos have been signed by Iva Shepard on the reverse and some of these also have other comments or details in her hand - name of the production her then-current address and some candid notes. For instance a back-comment on a very formal 'salon room' film scene - the actress comments "my $6.50 dress"; and on the back of a coquettish costumed portrait pose "Now dad! Wouldn't you lend me $ 50 when I smile like this"; and a portrait "Nicknamed 'The Simp' For "Baby Iva" This is the way I look at her when she's naughty. Aunt Iva." The entire group of 90 has her name on the reverse usually written in pencil and which look 'similar' to those more easily identified as her autograph; these are most likely a previous owner's identification. There is some duplication of portraiture repeat images or variations of a pose or portrait from a single studio. Studio imprints include: Murillo Los Angeles; Rembrandt N.Y.; Apeda N.Y.; C. Bennette Moore New Orleans La.; National N.Y.; Bangs Frank at the Longacre Bldg. B'way NY edge-discolored; Beck of Fresno cabinet card; Keystone Photo Service single example only with studio stamp corner blind-stamp; this is edge-chipped & with closed tears; Woodward; Unity N.Y.; Stagg L.A. Many of these are printed on the heavy double-weight photographic paper of the time. A few with corner pinholes as from mounting; some with old backer-residue from albums; some edge tips & edge-wear. Overall in good to very good condition and an evocative portrait archive from a variety of professional studios of the silent era; a screen star with a brief and prolific career. . Photography. Good.

Red cloth white lettering minor shelfwear faint tidemark wicked into fore-edges of plates at the very fore-edge w/ d.j. cover art with KKK rider on horseback next to heroine minor chipping head & foot of spine minor closed tears edgewear still G/VG- copy. First Photoplay edition of the notorious movie starring Lilian Gish Henry B. Walthall Mae Marsh Miriam Cooper Ralph Lewis George Siemann and others which steeped in the Confederacy’s Lost Cause mythos which had heavily influenced the misguided Dunning School’s interpretation of Reconstruction and significantly influenced Dixon and Woodrow Wilson. Directed by D.W. Griffith the movie was very successful but the racist overtones and blatant support of the Ku Klux Klan triggered widespread protests and it was banned in several cities. Very much like 21st-Century media Birth of a Nation’s portrayal of African-Americans created a justification for prejudice and discrimination which undermined Civil Rights for decades and reactivated the largely quiescent Ku Klux Klan movement and was the first film ever screened at the White House for President Wilson.
