1940Best.-Nr. 161224Hollywood: Joseph Jaasgur Photography 1940. Vintage photograph of Charlie Chaplin and his fourth and final wife Oona O'Neil circa mid-1940s. Photograph taken by noted photographer Joseph Jasgur with Jasgur's photography stamp on the verso along with an annotation in what appears to be Jasgur's hand noting "Charles 'Charlie Chaplain' sic and wife Oona O'Neil at L.A. Tennis Club / 1945-'47." In 1943 Chaplin then 54 married 18-year old Oona O'Neil daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neil only two weeks after a highly-publicized and speculative paternity suit was filed against Chaplin by aspiring actress Joan Barry. The overwhelmingly negative press regarding the suit aided by an aggressively hostile J. Edgar Hoover was only further compounded by the marriage and his career would never fully recover. Chaplin and O'Neil had eight children during their 18-year marriage and remained married until Chaplin's death in 1977 Joseph Jasgur was a celebrity photographer during Hollywood's Golden Age and is best remembered today for his 1946 photographs of a 19-year-old Marilyn Monroe then known as Norma Jean Dougherty. 9.25 x 7 inches.
