In fair condition lightly aged and creased. Folded twice for postage. He apologises for the late reply to her ‘nice note and the book-plate’. He gives details of two films he has been ‘terribly busy making’ ‘neither of them stories I wrote’: ‘The Phoenix is to start in Berlin this winter as a very big film with three big stars. And The Lorelei is to be made this summer on the Rhine as a film.’ He is sorry to learn that she has given up her restaurant in Honiton ‘Deer Park’: ‘It was a lovely place and without doubt the finest English cooking we’ve found.’ He ends by informing her that his wife has returned to California for the winter on account of her health. ‘So I’m alone with the two poodles.’ Eileen M. ref. 020216Alfred Kirschner (?-1961), producteur de cinéma, exploitant d'un studio de doublage, membre des studios Paramount. L.S. + enveloppe, Saint-MAurice, 18 octobre 1938, 1p in-4. [485]

Minor soiling to edges crease at bottom right corner 1929 holograph note on verso. Near fine. Rare is this image of cast with crew so many waiting to be identified with many of the top artists at Paramount Studios. The film is notable for being both the debut of Jeanette MacDonald and the first talkie film made by Ernst Lubitsch. The picture was also released in a French-language version called Parade d'amour. Maurice Chevalier thought he would never be capable of acting as a royal courtier and had to be persuaded by Lubitsch. This huge box-office hit appeared just after the Wall Street crash and did much to save the fortunes of Paramount Studios. The major players of this groundbreaking early sound musical are present in the front row including Lupino Lane Lubitsch MacDonald Chevalier and likely cinematographer Victor Milner at left behind Jeanette. He won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. He and Lubitsch are mentioned in the handwritten note on verso. The notations also specifically indicate the filming dates of June July and August 1929. Paramount unknown

1932ref. WALTER-FILM006662Paramount. No binding. About Fine. Los Angeles: Paramount 1932. Vintage original 8 x 10" 20 x 25 cm. black-and-white glossy silver gelatin photo. There are light signs of use at blank corners about fine. Marlene Dietrich was the true writer of the screenplay for this opus which took her from wealth to ruin to rags to fame to wealth again. The censors crossed out so much of her material even in the pre-Code period that by the time a final script was approved she and director/mentor Joseph von Sternberg had little interest in making the film. They came through though with a brilliant odyssey highlighted by Dietrich in many moods all behind heavy diffusion. Here is Dietrich as the down-and-out vagrant Helen Faraday with Sidney Toler as the detective on her trail. Photo coded 1385-87. Paramount books
