2004réf. 006710Yale University Press 2004 4to 27.5 cm XX 229 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. "A versatile genius whose oeuvre includes paintings engravings and detailed anatomical studies George Stubbs 1724–1806 was fascinated by horses. This handsome book presents for the first time the wide range of his equine imagery from refined portraits of racehorses to violent scenes of horses attacked by lions in the wild. Taking full account of the associations and status of the “noble horse” in eighteenth-century Britain and the colorful world of its devotees - both high and low - the authors examine Stubbs’s work from different points of view and offer many fresh interpretations. Malcolm Warner discusses how horses were regarded in Britain in Stubbs’s time the unexpected connection between his horse-and-lion compositions and the creation of the English thoroughbred and his classicism. Robin Blake examines the young Whig noblemen who were Stubbs’s first patrons the grooms jockeys trainers and other attendants who appear in his horse portraits and his curious dealings with the Prince of Wales. The book also includes an essay by conservators Lance Mayer and Gay Myers on Stubbs’s experiments with wax and enamel. For admirers of Stubbs’s art eighteenth-century English painting and horses this book is an essential addition to their bookshelves." from the blurb Yale University Press hardcover

1958réf. 24230Boston: Boston University Graduate School 1958. 2 pages. 1 vols. 4to. To Wesley Hartley a long-time educator and teacher formerly of the American Council on Education. Folded else in fine condition with original envelope. 2 pages. 1 vols. 4to. ¶Responding to a question about the importance of his high school education and asking whether the college experience was necessary in creative writing. He replies "The desire to write was probably born and bred in me. I read avidly from childhood on. I was romantic and sentimental and lived much in my imagination. My schools helped me very much by improving my taste by making me read better stuff by encouraging critical and intellectual activity.College taught me to read better books have better taste and judgment engage in more intellectual activity. I don't think it is possible for anyone to be a writer in this age without such training. The competition is too great. Rarely a writer can acquire the background and the literary and philosophical knowledge on his own book but this is not a day of self-made men. The Lincolns and Twains of today are all in college.Robert Frost said half jokingly that "all there is to writing is having ideas" and 'ideas' are what colleges deal in. Being an expert in ideas takes a lot of training. It is possible to do it alone but usually the youth who thinks he can do it alone is simply hoping to get off easy." He comments on the effect and importance of his creative writing courses. Boston University Graduate School unknown

2004réf. 55309New York: Simon & Schuster 2004. First Printing Stated. Hardcover. Very good/very good. Format is approximately 5.25 inches by 7.25 inches. 12 195 pages. Notes. Signed by the author Howard Dean on the title page. Howard Brush Dean III born November 17 1948 is an American physician author and retired politician who served as Governor of Vermont from 1991 to 2003 and Chair of the Democratic National Committee DNC from 2005 to 2009 and works as a political consultant and commentator. Dean was a candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 2004 presidential election. His implementation of the fifty-state strategy as head of the DNC is credited with the Democratic victories in the 2006 and 2008 elections. Afterward he became a political commentator and consultant to McKenna Long & Aldridge a law and lobbying firm. Dean was named chairman emeritus of the DNC upon his retirement. Dean endorsed Clinton over her competitor Senator Bernie Sanders in spite of the fact that Sanders represented the state of Vermont where Dean had been governor. Howard Dean's rational approach to reforming politics in America is based on his experiences as Governor of Vermont and his Presidential bid in 2004. The Vermont governor and former presidential candidate calls for an end to the right-wing and special-interest agenda that has dominated America and calls for each American citizen to stand up for what he or she believes and demand a system-wide change.
