réf. 8443Hartford: American Publishing Company 1874. Hardcover. 8vo full sheep. 574 2 pp. Frontis. 1 folding plate numerous illus. Small early owner's ticket affixed to upper left corner of front paste-down. CONDITION: Very good moderately rubbed nick to upper right corner of title label at spine; a pleasing copy. First edition of Twain's first novel whose title forever branded the post-Civil War era and its greed here bound in full publisher's sheep in a very nice state of preservation. BAL describes a "genuine title page" dated 1873 but copies are found with title pages dated both 1873 and 1874 with the text in both early and late states. Moreover it is known that when the book was issued at Christmas in 1873 that the first sixty copies bound which were sent to reviewers were in wrappers and had title pages dated 1874. Additionally Charles Dudley Warner inscribed a copy to his mother on December 24th 1873 that has an 1874 title-page. The present example dated 1874 has all the textual first issue points except for the repetition of lines pp. 352-353 beginning "Let him keep it." which are here in the corrected state. 1877réf. 886Vernon Township Richland County Ohio 1877. Folio. 310 x 200 mm. 13 x 8 inches. Manuscript in ink. 500 pp. missing the first 3 pages. Contemporary calf well worn spine separating. Paper stock a bit brown with age; final 30 pages and lower board damaged by water. With faults a legible and useful history of Vernon Ohio. Valuable compilation of early records for the town of Vernon Ohio which was organized March 9 1825 out of the north half of Sandusky and was at this time six miles square. The population in 1840 was about one thousand. After 1845 Vernon became part of Crawford County and is well watered by the tributaries of the Sandusky River. This 'clerk's book' contains records of indenture cattle ear marks election results and an alphabetized census of "white male persons subject to perform military duties" taken in 1844. In addition there are local ordinances testimonials and depositions on town issues records of road condition and expenditures to maintain them land conveyances surety bonds and trustee services and miscellaneous town financial business as recorded by the town clerk. In addition to the records of town business and there are recorded a number of indentures from local women binding their sons to local farmers to learn the business of running a farm. In March of 1841 Mary Ann Nicolin is recorded as making an indenture for her son John the Baptist Nicolin age seven with Thomas Roe for four years. The contract outlines the terms of the indenture and mentoring that John the Baptist Nicolin will receive from Mr. Roe. Another example is an indenture between Barbara Brown and Peter Bauer binding her son age seven to Bauer until he reaches the age eighteen. One can only guess what the situation was that compelled Mrs. Brown to apprentice her boy for eleven years to local farmer to learn the trade of farming. John Warner and George Keller were town clerks both coming from York County Pennsylvania in 1837 as did several of the other early settlers to Vernon. Names of dozens of other early settlers who populated Crawford County are found in these records with information on their lively hoods and positions in society. "This section of country presents the evidence of real prosperity. It is inhabited largely by industrious energetic and hardy people who came from Pennsylvania Maryland and other Middle States." 886 . unknown books

"WB 1122" Warner Bros written in white ink near the base of the spine. "IMPORTANT! RETURN Story Dept." stamped on the front free end page. This book was used for John Huston's 1948 film adaptation which became one of Warner Bros' most enduring classic films. Penciled in the upper left hand corner of the front free end page are the names of two Hollywood executives Henry Blanke who produced the film and Vincent Sherman who directed the film. The names were written when they checked out the book from the vault and upon return the name and date was crossed out. Henry Blanke was one of the film's producers and Vincent Sherman directed the film. Near fine condition. No dustjacket. This book represents the starting point in the chain of events that turned this outstanding novel into one of the most important movies of Hollywood's Golden Age. Director John Huston first read the novel by B. Traven in 1935 and had always thought the material would make a great movie with his father in the main role. Based on a 19th-century ballad by a German poet Traven's book reminded Huston of his own adventures in the Mexican cavalry. B. Traven was the pen name of a presumably novelist whose real name nationality date and place of birth and details of biography are all still subject to dispute. One of the few certainties about Traven's life is that he lived for years in Mexico where the majority of his fiction is also set including The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. unknown books

réf. 5239Madison Wisconsin: J. J. Stoner Publisher; Chas. Shober & Co Prop's Chicago Litho'g Co. 1876. Tinted lithograph 34.125 x 21.875" plus margins. A large and quite impressive bird's eye view of Portland Maine as it appeared after a decade of rebuilding following the great fire of 1866. This fine richly detailed view of Portland depicts the city-viewed from an elevated eastern vantage point-as a lively prosperous place with a busy harbor an active waterfront crowded with wharves and ships numerous factories with smoke spilling out of their smokestacks trains coming and going and many fine commercial public and private buildings. A key in the title margin identifies some 118 buildings and wharves many of them along the waterfront including the Eagle Sugar Refining Company Portland Star Match Co. Works the Grand Trunk Rail Road Depot Portland Co.'s Machine Shops and others. The Portland & Ogdensburg Rail Road and the Maine Central Rail Road serve the western end of the waterfront while the Grand Trunk Rail Road and the Portland & Rochester Rail Road serve the eastern end. Beyond the city proper the Back Cove and other more sparsely developed areas can be seen against a distant mountainous backdrop. The railroads stretch across this landscape disappearing into the distance. Bird's eye view publisher Joseph John Stoner 1829-1917 a native of Highspire Pennsylvania was apprenticed to a chair-ornamenter in Harrisburg before migrating to Cincinnati where he worked as a map and book agent in the 1860's. By 1865 Stoner had resettled in Madison Wisconsin eventually becoming a sales agent for city view artist Albert Ruger with whom he formed a partnership Ruger & Stoner in 1869. Stoner worked both in partnership with Ruger and independently into the 1890s publishing at least 314 views with his imprint on them and likely a good many lacking his imprint as well making him one of the most prolific town and city view publishers of the 19th century. Charles Shober ca 1920-1906 was born in Germany immigrated to America and is known to have been working as a lithographer with Charles Reen in Philadelphia by 1856. The two moved to Chicago in 1857 and established the firm of Reen & Shober but soon thereafter Shober entered into partnership with August Roth. The company operating as Charles Shober and later Charles Shober & Co. produced some of the finest lithography in Chicago specializing in advertising posters and sheet-music covers until their building was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Afterwards Shober and Edward Carqueville assumed management of the rebuilt Chicago Lithographic Company operating as Chicago Lithographing Company Shober & Company Proprietors until 1877 when the firm became known as Shober & Carqueville. Specializing in advertising posters and trade cards the company also became one of the leading producers of circus and theatrical posters in the country and was the largest lithographic firm in Chicago for the last quarter of the nineteenth century. 1954réf. 55808New York: Simon and Schuster 1954. First edition. Very good. Lavishly inscribed association copy with multiple drawings from the surrealist master - signed to movie studio mogul Jack Warner and his wife. Jack Warner 1892-1978 was the legendary co-founder and CEO of Warner Bros. Studios which produced such classic films as THE JAZZ SINGER 1927 the first feature-length "talkie" LITTLE CAESAR and PUBLIC ENEMY 1931 THE MALTESE FALCON 1941 CASABLANCA 1943 A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE 1951 THE SEARCHERS 1956 MY FAIR LADY 1964 and WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF 1966 as well as innumerable other iconic films. By the time Dalí inscribed this copy in 1954 the two had already known each other for at least a decade. In 1944 Dalí had come to Hollywood to work on the Hitchcock film SPELLBOUND for which the artist contributed a pioneering dream sequence. By 1945 Warner had commissioned Dalí to paint portraits of both Warner and his wife Ann with Dalí actually living with the couple while he completed the works Sperling and Millner 269. This unconventional arrangement in fact led to a now-famous meeting between Dalí and Walt Disney an encounter that resulted in "a lifelong friendship between the man behind the mouse and the painter of melted clocks" Jukareddy. At a dinner party hosted by Warner Dalí and Disney were introduced and hit it off so well they began a collaboration that would eventually result in the production of "Destino" a six-and-a-half-minute surrealist animated film: "Dalí and Disney immediately connected and an overjoyed Dalí accepted Disney's proposal to collaborate on a surrealist animated short. Over the next eight months they created more than 200 storyboard sketches" ibid. A work of myth-making and fame-enhancement as much as anything Dalí's whimsical MUSTACHE finds him and his mustache answering questions "Your mustache looks so rigid - how does it react to the winds of public opinion" with playful responses "She bends" all accompanied by surrealist photographs and photo collages. A close and important association between these two titans with among the most elaborate and exuberant Dalí inscriptions we've seen. Original black-and-white pictorial boards. No jacket as issued. 126 pages. Illustrated throughout with photos of Dalí by Philippe Halsman. Preface by Dalí with a "Postface" by Halsman plus publisher's notes "on how some of the photographs were made." Inscribed in year of publication by Dalí to Jack Warner and his wife Ann across the front pastedown and endpaper: "Pur sic a pun / Prince des Gouts Felines / Jack / ei / Anunshka / L'amour de sur tout / Dalí / Gala / 1954. Roughly: "Purr for the Prince of Feline Tastes Jack and Ann Love above all." Dali has added numerous figures including a crown a shooting star a drawing of two figures dancing in a desert plus three scurrying ants and a moon playing a trumpet overhead. Chipping to head of spine with top centimeter or so of spine beginning to separate but holding. Some toning to endpapers and some starting at gutter before title-page. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Simon and Schuster unknown books
