Twain and Warner started this book on a dare after being teased by their wives that Twain could not repeat the success of INNOCENTS ABROAD. Twain proposed that he and Warner write a book together and “we will so interweave our work that these wives of ours will not be able to say which part has been written by Mark Twain and which by Charles D. Warner.” Not only did they fool their wives but realized halfway through that they had something well worth publishing. THE GILDED AGE was born. The tale of Colonel Sellers and the Hawkins family and their determined pursuit of Wealth--a novel for which an entire era was named. American Publishing Co. hardcover
1936réf. 620642New York: Street & Smith 1936. Softcover. Very Good. Magazine. Cover by Howard V. Brown. Perfect bound in wrappers. Stain along bottom edge and spine of rear wrap stain on bottom edge very good. This issue features stories from Raymond Z. Gallun Murray Leinster Douglas Drew Donald Wandrei and more. Also includes a young 13 year old Harry Warner Jr.'s first letter of comment. Just two years later in 1938 Warner who would later become admired by fans for his letter writings would go on to publish the fanzine Spaceways. He followed it with Horizons in 1939 which ran for 64 consecutive years as part of the Fantasy Amateur Press Association FAPA mailing with Warner only ever missing two mailings. One-time fan Roger Ebert once wrote: "Locs letters of comment were the currency of payment for fanzine contributors; you wrote and in the next issue got to read about what you had written. Today I can see my name on a full-page ad for a movie with disinterest but what Harry Warner or Buck Coulson had to say about me — well that was important. Street & Smith unknown
