rif. 463766Mouton & Co. B. V. Hardcover. Good. In terms of folklore Russia provides a richness and diversity of material which can scarcely be equalled in Western Europe but unfortunately Russian folk theatre has been largely ignored. Here Elizabeth A. Warner aims to give light to a very important subject and discusses the two main phases of Russian folk theatre. The first phase takes place during the reign of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich characterised by ritual drama of partly pagan origin together with the gradual development of dramatic games and scenes. The second period of folk theatre was inaugurated with the reign of Peter the Great where relaxation of the power of the Church coupled with Peter's own interest in the theatre led to the introduction of Russia's first completely secular theatre for all classes of society in 1702. As well as these two phases the book considers ritual drama puppet theatre nonritual drama and the folk actor and his art. All in lovely condition with a good cover and very clean and vibrant pages. The only sign of wear is the ex-library markings throughout. Copyright © Mouton & Co. B. V. Mouton & Co. B. V. hardcover
