1914rif. ABE-1790936838455An irreplaceable primary source document for institutional special collections Sinologists and Asian art historians this monumental archival discovery represents Langdon Warner's personal presentation master copy of his 1914 report to the Smithsonian Institution proposing a permanent American archaeological institute in Peking following a 15-month survey across Europe and Republican China. Bound carbon-copy typescripts 28.321.6 cm in original quarter calf boards binder: 28.922 cm leaves punched and secured by string featuring very occasional annotations and corrections in both manuscript and typewriter. The volume collation comprises 227 leaves total typed to rectos only: i title/cover sheet with Warner's autograph MS title 137 pp. Main Report i Part II Suggestions and Recommendations 51 pp. 55 including 4 extra bis leaves for pp. 17–20 6 pp. Itinerary 1 blank flyleaf and 26 heavy watermarked interleaved sheets with 48 tipped-in original silver prints with typed captions. While the quarter calf boards show natural age-toning and shelfwear the internal contents remain remarkably crisp and firm with bright photographic prints. Distinct from the machine-typed institutional copy at the Smithsonian Institution Archives SIRI: 283452 this primary master volume features Warner's handwritten title and signature in dark ink on the title page—"Proposed American School of Archaeology in Peking. Report of Langdon Warner." verified against contemporary holographs at the Theodore Roosevelt Digital Library. The 48 tipped-in silver prints capture crucial East Asian heritage sites prior to mid-20th-century destruction and looting notably documenting the Kung Hsien Cave Temples with its cliff Buddhas in pristine state the Kaifengfu Iron Pagoda Hei Hsih Kwan Ming Tombs Changtefu Temple and Angkor Wat. Excellent unbroken provenance is established by the original blue inkstamp to the title page verso dated January 5 1942: "Gift Mrs. Mitchell Carroll" wife of the General Secretary of the Archaeological Society of Washington. The text foundational to Republican-era Sinological record chronicles Warner's high-level consultations with European Sinologists including Aurel Stein Paul Pelliot Edouard Chavannes and R. L. Hobson as well as diplomatic engagements in China with figures such as President Yuan Shikai laying out the strategic blueprint for American archaeological and ethnographic expansion in Asia.
