1899ref. 38647n.p.: n.p. 1899. First edition. Stapled paper wrappers. A very good copy with toned edges. 14 pp. 8vo. American essayist and novelist Charles Dudley Warner Twain's coauthor on The Gilded Age was a lawyer by training and wrote this article against the backdrop of criminal reform in Connecticut. In it he gives attention to the rules and regulations of parole and parole violations in particular defense of the Indeterminate Sentence which Warner describes as a scientific a disciplinary a really humanitarian method. "We have tried all other means of protecting society of lessening the criminal class of reforming the criminal. The proposed Indeterminate Sentence with reformatory discipline is the only one that promises to relieve society of the insolent domination and the terrorism of the criminal class; is the only one that can deter men from making a career of crime; is the only one that offers a fair prospect for the reformation of the criminal offender. Why not try it Why not put the whole system of criminal jurisprudence and procedure for the suppression of crime upon a sensible and scientific basis" Quite uncommon. It would be quoted in full in The Connecticut Magazine Vol. 5 in support of a bill on prison reform and later be republished in his "Fashions in Literature" 1902. OCLC locates three copies: Columbia Law Trinity College and Yale Law. n.p. unknown

Very good/ very good A rather lovely association copy of Warner's final collection of non-Elfin short stories written during the years preceding her partner Valentine Ackland's death in November 1969 from the collection of Roger Peers Curator of the Dorset County Museum 1959-1992 late friend of STW and saviour of her personal library and papers many items of which were transferred to the Museum; in establishing its STW collection he played a crucial role in ensuring her cultural legacy. A prominent curator Roger Peers 1932-2023 was also Secretary of the Dorset Natural History & Archaeological Society DNHAS through which he met STW. The elderly author granted Peers "the chance to choose for the collection of DNHAS which owns the Dorset County Museum any books from the library in her house at Frome Vauchurch and also for myself" Peers 2017. In 1986 with the house needing to be cleared Peers worked with bookseller John Ruston to "put aside all the copies of STW's and VA's books all the presentation copies of other authors and a great many books of significance and reference as well as shopping lists and drafts of poems". Peers also retrieved manuscripts of STW's musical compositions from rubbish bags. Russell & Lawrence Mitchell 33a; Roger Peers 2017 'A Dilemma and a Narrow Escape.'
