1998ref. 1626Easy Microsoft Office 97 Title: Easy Microsoft Office 97 Author: Nancy Warner Publisher: Que Publishing Publication Date: 1998 ISBN-10: 0789716879 ISBN-13: 9780789716873 Language: English Format: Paperback heavily illustrated with a focus on visual learning. Overview and Significance Easy Microsoft Office 97 is a classic title from Que Publishing's "Easy" series a highly popular line of computer books designed for the absolute beginner. Published in 1998 this book was released at the peak of Microsoft Office 97's dominance. Office 97 was a landmark release introducing a radically redesigned interface with the now-ubiquitous Command Bars the precursor to the Ribbon and powerful new features across its applications. This book served as a gentle non-intimidating guide for millions of new users—in homes schools and offices—navigating this new software suite for the first time. Content and Scope The book covers the core applications of the Microsoft Office 97 suite breaking down complex software into simple step-by-step tasks. Its structure is highly visual and task-oriented. Key applications covered include: Microsoft Word 97: Fundamental document creation formatting and editing. Using new features like the Office Assistant "Clippit" the animated paperclip and automated grammar checking. Performing mail merges and creating tables. Microsoft Excel 97: Basic spreadsheet creation: entering data formatting cells and creating simple formulas. Introduction to charting and graphing data. Managing worksheets and workbooks. Microsoft PowerPoint 97: Creating simple presentations using templates and the AutoContent Wizard. Adding text basic graphics and slide transitions. Microsoft Outlook 97: Managing email contacts and calendars in the new integrated desktop information manager. Scheduling appointments and tasks. Microsoft Access 97 often covered in a limited capacity: Basic concepts of databases such as creating simple tables and forms. The "Easy" Series Pedagogy The book's methodology is defined by its signature approach: Visual Step-by-Step Instructions: Each task is broken down into small numbered steps accompanied by a screenshot showing exactly what the user should see on their screen. Minimal Jargon: Technical terms are either avoided or clearly explained in simple language. Task-Based Focus: Instead of explaining every feature the book focuses on teaching how to accomplish common practical tasks e.g. "How to Write a Letter" "How to Create a Household Budget". Large Clear Type and Layout: Designed for easy reading and to prevent the user from feeling overwhelmed. Intended Audience This book was perfectly suited for: The First-Time Computer User: Often an adult at home or in a small business who needed to learn Office for personal or professional use. Students required to use Office for their coursework. Office Workers transitioning from older versions of Office or competing products like WordPerfect and Lotus 1-2-3. Anyone intimidated by thick technical software manuals. Legacy and Current Relevance While the software is now completely obsolete this book holds significance as: A Time Capsule of Computing: It perfectly captures the state of personal computing and productivity software in the late 1990s. It reflects a time when graphical user interfaces were becoming standard and users needed guidance for this new way of working. A Benchmark in Technical Communication: The "Easy" series format was hugely influential and demonstrated the power of visual task-oriented instruction a philosophy that continues in today's online tutorials and "For Dummies" books. A Symbol of a Digital Transition: For many books like this were their first introduction to the modern digital office making them a nostalgic artifact of a major shift in how people worked and communicated. In summary Nancy Warner's Easy Microsoft Office 97 is a quintessential example of late-1990s consumer-level technical writing. It was a patient accessible and highly effective guide that helped demystify personal computing for a massive audience during a critical period of technological adoption. Today it stands as a historical artifact of a pivotal moment in software history. Que Publishing paperback
