1880réf. 190A Collection of Fifty Cartoons of Eminent Personages is a book of political caricatures published in 1880 by The Whitehall Review a London-based periodical. The volume features satirical illustrations of prominent public figures of the Victorian era. A copy of this rare publication is held in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Acquired in 1947 as a gift from Beulah Dimmick Chase the book is classified under Drawings and Prints Object Number: 47.98.7. The Met has made the item available through its Open Access API for research and public use so you can tell how rare this book is and how difficult it can be to find a decent copy of the publication. The drawings are not as we would describe as cartoons in this day and age. The drawings are beautifully created and are very good images of the subjects. This is a delight for true lovers of art - the artists of these drawings are so very talented this book is a must-have for a collector of such drawings. This 146 year old book is in good condition. There is a little damage to the cover over the spine but the pages are all intact and connected to the spine. There are a couple of pages where the page has split a little from the previous page - see the photo of Pope Leo XIII for an example. Beyond this the book is in great shape!
