Rare first edition in the original Latin of the collected poetic works of the humanist and neo-Latin poet Janus or Joannes Secundus Jan Everaerts 1511-1536 who "ranks among the foremost poets of the world" as "the only famous 16th-century Dutch poet" Guépin p. 231: "one of the most significant and enduring poets of the Renaissance" and "the outstanding Latin love poet of the northern Renaissance" Price p. 1. Although not quite twenty-five when he died he published numerous poetic works from 1532 to 1536 but left most of his work unpublished at his premature death. Much of his poetry appeared for the first time in the present posthumous edition. Janus is most famous for his "Basia" kisses: 19 lyric love poems influenced by Catullus. Janus's three books of elegies especially the first book comprising 11 love poems to his possibly fictional first love Julia are also masterpieces of neo-Latin poetry.Although revered internationally in his own century and influential throughout the 17th and 18th centuries among his avid readers were Ronsard Fleming Huygens Milton and Goethe Janus's name has been eclipsed in the Netherlands by those of Cats and Vondel in part because they wrote in Dutch.Janus Secundus was born in The Hague. His father was a lawyer at the leading courts of the Low Countries and the family moved to Maastricht when Janus was sixteen. He studied law there and later studied at Bourges and at the University in Louvain. Though a native Dutch speaker and fluent in French Janus had learned Latin with his older brothers at an early age and corresponded with them in Latin. With 3 French verses in a near contemporary hand on the endleavesFurther with a near contemporary donation inscription on the title-page; a 19th-century bookplate on the inside front wrapper and blue ink stamp on the title-page. With the title-page somewhat worn and with stains in its margins plus a water stain in the first 10 leaves and a fainter marginal one some of the last few leaves but otherwise in good condition. The sewing supports have broken at the front hinge and the velum wrapper is somewhat soiled with a small corner of the back wrapper lost. 2013réf. 11567Newark VT: Janus Press 2013. Original Wrappers. Fine binding. 6-1/2" x 7." Limited edition one of 120 copies. Accordion fold with 8 panels 4 of them are fold-down pages. Each of the four page-spreads include letterpress text in various typefaces and colors which fold-down expanding the canvas of words sayings and accusations including a catalog of U.S. Senators and Representatives of the 111th Congress who became lobbyists-a list that fills the fold-down page in a small font; these opposite a lithograph by Van Vliet each lithograph is titled by the top word on the opposite page: Propagandist Lobbyist Banker Joe Public. Bound in gold paper repeated printed with the word "Greed" and all housed in gold slipcase. A fine copy. In a contemporary newspaper article in the Burlington Free Press Candace Page relates an interview with Van Vliet: "She picks up dummy of GREED a slim volume that will sit inside a glittery cover of gold paper. It opens like an accordion to display four Van Vliet black-and-white lithographs of distorted faces: A banker a lobbyist a newscaster she says 'and this one on the end the sap John Q. Public us.'" Van Vliet continues in the Page interview: "The word 'greed' will be printed multiple times on the cover in heavy unevenly inked type as though it were printed contemptuously by some greedy person with no respect for the written word. The paper is not handmade - that would be too good for the book. Instead it is 'slick nasty machine-made paper' she says. The edges of the gold cover will be sharp 'because greed is not a comfortable subject.'" There is a wonderful irony that the lithographs employed in Greed were originally drawn for an edition of Kafka decades before that just weren't quite right for the project. Here they are perfect! This is a striking book a political book one might say an angry and defiant book. Van Vliet's politics being informed by the McCarthy era during which she was a student she admits to having distrusted the powerful ever since. This edition sold out very quickly and is now rare in commerce. A book that was is and will always be relevant. Janus Press unknown

All housed in paper-covered slipcase with spine label. A wonderful book by Van Vliet that showcases Loney's evocative lyrics capturing a sense of place at a moment in time but also a sense of being-it is introspective and aware. 1996réf. 10934Newark VT: Janus Press 1996. Fine binding. 2-1/4" x 2-1/4." 28 pp. Limited edition one of 200 numbered copies. Signed by Van Vliet and Audrey Holden who assembled them. Housed in a non-adhesive cube of MacGregor-Vinzani pink abaca paper with a linocut pattern in yellow. In plastic outer box. A fine copy. "Waste not; want not" as they say. What better way to employ the offcuts from a significant project than to create this absolutely delightful alphabet. Of any number of throughlines in Van Vliet's long career her joy is certainly one of the most prominent. It appears in her most ambitious projects as much as it does in this wonderfully playful artist's book. Fine The Janus Press - Fifty Years p. 52. Janus Press unknown

Very good copy. Plautus is one of the most celebrated comic poets of Rome. This important edition by Gruter with Taubmann's commentaries is highly regarded. Jan Gruter 1560-1627 a Flemish-born philologist scholar and librarian at Heidelberg was the last curator of the Palatine library in Heidelberg at the time one of the greatest repositories of classical manuscripts in Europe. / "As custodian of the Palatine MSS Janus Gruter had always been ready to oblige scholars who publicly acknowledged his aid. The excerpts from the MSS of Camerarius which he sent to Taubman for his edition of Plautus 1605-12 were duly acknowledged; but he regarded with disfavour and endeavoured to discredit the Plautine labours of Philipp Pareus. . .In the third edition of Taubmann's text Gruter attempted to reflect on the accuracy of Pareus by stating that the text of Taubmann had been bona fide collated by the librarian himself with that of the MSS." – Sandys A History of Classical Scholarship vol.
