1819réf. 59962Paris: Chez Arthus Bertrand 1819. First edition in French first published in English London 1816. 8vo. 4 volumes: 4 lxxiv 309; 4 346; 4 432; 4 517 pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait to volume one. This work contains a portion of the king's autobiography the original of which is now lost. Some controversy exists over who actually wrote the book and it is variously attributed to a number of authors; Clarke 1766-1834 the biographer of Lord Nelson was certainly involved in its publication. James 1633-1701 the second surviving son of Charles I served as James II King of England and Ireland and James VII King of Scotland 1685-1688 when he was deposed by the Glorious Revolution. Some foxing but a very good copy. Somewhat later French green calf spine faded uniformly to brown gilt ornaments and labels on spine marbled endpapers and edges. 7210. 1853réf. 010796Philadelphia 1853. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This stampless folded letter is written on bifold stationery that measures 15.5" x 10" unfolded. It is datelined "Philadelphia 4th Nove. 1853" and was sent by Sunrow Paey sp to the Reverend Patrick Reilly the founder and headmaster of St. Mary's College in Wilmington Delaware. It bears a bold Philadelphia 5 postmark in blue and features a large letterhead illustration of the school. In nice shape. Paey was perhaps a patron or the father of attending students. His letter reads in part: "My brother has arrived today and . . . wants to spend 2 or 3 more days hear . . . so you see I can not visit on Monday. I send you with this the two papers that my father sent for you and a letter . . . you will please give the other paper to the boys. . ." . In 1834 the relatively recently ordained parish priest in Wilmington Patrick Reilly established a boarding school for boys in his residence in part to cover the expenses he incurred to care for his aging mother. It included only elementary subjects and operated on a very small scale until 1839 when many parishioners familiar with the Sisters of Charity's St. Peter's Female Academy petitioned him to expand his school which he did accepting 19 "scholars" in that first year and 28 the next. Demand increased especially following the arrival of Potato Famine immigrants and Reilly enlarged his school several times and by 1845 he was accepting boys from Baltimore Philadelphia and New York. He also expanded his curriculum to accommodate demand and began offering preparatory and college courses. With support and funding from the non-Catholic DuPont family he was able to acquire a college charter in 1847 and St. Mary's became one of the premier Catholic colleges of the east. It thrived enrolling students from Delaware Georgia Maryland Mississippi New Jersey New York Pennsylvania South Carolina Virginia Costa Rica and Cuba. The loss of Southern students with the outbreak of the Civil War was a major blow to the school and after the Bishop of Philadelphia ordered Reilly to devote his effort to build and pastor a new St. Mary's Church in Wilmington the college foundered closing its doors in 1866. For more information see Peterman's "History of St. Mary's College Wilmington Delaware 1847-1867" in the September 1966 edition of Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia. A nice illustrated lettersheet featuring one of the earliest and most important Catholic colleges in the United States. . unknown books

1846réf. 29011Boston: Dutton and Wentworth Printers 1846. Original printed salmon wrappers stitched 48pp. Occasional light spotting Very Good. "The letters concern Rev. Adams' refusal to grant letters of recommendation from his church to the Payson church of which Rev. Fairchild was pastor because of accusations of immoral conduct against Fairchild" Cohen. The Payson church was thus deprived of "the fellowship of sister churches." Fairchild had allegedly seduced a young woman Rhoda Davidson of Edgecomb Maine while she was a domestic in his family. She had a child and nominated Fairchild as the father. Ecclesiastical trials ensued. Fairchild claimed that rival ministers one of whom was Reverend Adams had defamed him by calling him an habitual libertine and adulterer. Adams as Fairchild puts it "publicly said that there was more guilt resting on my head than on the head of any man who walks the streets of Boston or words to that effect." The Payson Church Committee examines the relevant documents and concludes "We clearly saw that no guilt had been proved against him and therefore felt bound to regard him as innocent wondering how any human creature could have a heart to add another grain to his load of suffering or inflict one fresh wound on his wife and children. We deem him one of the most injured and persecuted clergymen which the history of this country can furnish." Cohen 13687. AI 46-54 5. Dutton and Wentworth, Printers unknown books

First edition with original pictorial cloth boards and fifty illustrations of pro-suffrage political cartoons. An uncommon text. 336 pages. Keith's tone is often tongue-in-cheek but his purpose is to promote women's suffrage. As he argues in the preface: "Is it not the man that is unwomanly ans unmanly too in strutting about as if he were the lord of creation . Where is the consistency in allowing a woman to own property and take care of men's childrne and not giving her the power to protect either of them" While some countries extended minor voting rights to women in the year of this book's publication full suffrage would not be granted to American women until almost decades later. Boards toned and lightly soiled but the front cover remains attractive and the design is still bold. Spine sunned and bumped at head and tail spine titles faded; front hinge worn through for 3.5" inches. One-inch chip on spine shows shelfwear. Internal text block tight and the pages are clean and bright. Overall in good condition. As of March 2022 less than 15 copies held by libraries and institutions worldwide per OCLC Wolrdcat. 1937réf. 87643n.p. 1937. Quarto. 28.5cm. Mimeographed typewritten MS. Institutional black cloth half binding over brown paper covered boards titled by hand to spine. 167pp. A clean strong institutional binding with some minor wear and scuffing to extremities solid and durable; internally clean old library stamp from the Theological Seminary of Lancaster PA to front pastedown; something of a hybrid beast with some handwritten and typed additions and corrections and a number of pages inserted into the text at points on varying sizes of paper which combined with the number of original photographs laid onto the pages at appropriate places makes for a pleasing impression; the mimeo'd pages vary in clarity and quality with some displaying a characteristic blur but remaining legible and others being crisp and clean. A very good example of a "work in progress" ms with 29 photographs of notable church figures and locations; some are clearly sourced from other publications but a number are original photographs supplied by either the Reverend Sheely pastor at the time of publication or by local photographers and members of the congregation with credit often given on small slips bound into the work at the appropriate points. Garrett states in the preface "While serving as pastor of the New Oxford Charge 1914-1917 it became known that the Charge had no records of its splendid past. Upon inquiry as to the cause of this loss it was said that a fire had destroyed the Parsonage at Abbotstown and with it the records had been destroyed." Garrett's efforts to remedy this historical void which became known during the research for his published and rather better known work "History of The Kreuz Creek Charge" 1924 resulted in the current manuscript "the Minutes of Zion's Classis were gone through systematically. At that time a great many notes on the New Oxford Charge were gathered with the hope of using them some time in the future." Garrett's history follows the Pastors and notable congregational members of the church from the Rev. Carl Ludwig Boehme in 1775 through to Rev. Sheely in the early 1920's and the contemporary ministers of the church at the time of writing in 1937 covering many of the major events expansions victories and tragedies of the necessarily small originally German immigrant driven and maintained church in rural Adams County. The area is necessarily considerably altered from even Rev. Garrett's day but family names of the original congregation can doubtless be found among the followers of St. Paul's UCC of New Oxford PA. and a number of other places of worship that serve the descendents of the original German and Scots-Irish inhabitants of the region. It is a safe assumption from a historical point of view that the Reverend Garrett's history might be the only collected survival of a number of Pennsylvania families and personalities. If this work was published beyond this working manuscript then we can find no trace either in trade or in US institutional holdings. unknown books
