1933Best.-Nr. 87897London: Kegan Paul Trench Trubner & Co 1933. First U.K. Edition. First Impression. Octavo 24cm; publisher's teal cloth titled in gilt to spine; dustjacket; 307pp. Slight scuffing and bumping to corners and spine ends; boards noticeably bowed; internally clean with some light foxing and spotting mainly confined to the page edges illustrated with full page plates; in a clean strong price-clipped dustjacket with some light spotting and soiling to the front and rear panels and some visible toning to the spine panel with some shallow fraying to the spine ends. All in all a Very Good solid copy of a book that is often considerable less pleasing. One of the definitive "modern" sourceworks for werewolf and lycanthropic myth legend and study. Alongside Sabine Baring-Gould's "The Book of Were-Wolves" from 1865 which Summers' work references frequently it is the generally acknowledged source-work for the field of werewolf were-creature and shapeshifter folklore. Summers whose reputation for eccentricity and obsessive study were not even slightly exagerrated writes with an accessible and informed confidence on a number of esoteric subjects with this work and his twin studies on vampirism "The Vampire in Europe" and "Vampire; Kith and Kin" forming a triangle of weird alternative and occult texts that in all likelihood are the origin of most of the commonly understood tropes and memes regarding the field. Summers' primary skill aside from being pre-eminent in spinning a good yarn was in academic research the advantage of this is that all of his major works regarding occult and esoteric subjects are essentially reading guides towards an expanded library of the subject gathered together in one easily accessible and compelling form. Whilst he may indeed have been madder than a sack of weasels and perhaps not the sort of chap you would want to leave in charge of a school bus his contribution to the fields of alternative study are undeniable and his books highly collectible in first edition. 1937Best.-Nr. 87643n.p. 1937. Quarto. 28.5cm. Mimeographed typewritten MS. Institutional black cloth half binding over brown paper covered boards titled by hand to spine. 167pp. A clean strong institutional binding with some minor wear and scuffing to extremities solid and durable; internally clean old library stamp from the Theological Seminary of Lancaster PA to front pastedown; something of a hybrid beast with some handwritten and typed additions and corrections and a number of pages inserted into the text at points on varying sizes of paper which combined with the number of original photographs laid onto the pages at appropriate places makes for a pleasing impression; the mimeo'd pages vary in clarity and quality with some displaying a characteristic blur but remaining legible and others being crisp and clean. A very good example of a "work in progress" ms with 29 photographs of notable church figures and locations; some are clearly sourced from other publications but a number are original photographs supplied by either the Reverend Sheely pastor at the time of publication or by local photographers and members of the congregation with credit often given on small slips bound into the work at the appropriate points. Garrett states in the preface "While serving as pastor of the New Oxford Charge 1914-1917 it became known that the Charge had no records of its splendid past. Upon inquiry as to the cause of this loss it was said that a fire had destroyed the Parsonage at Abbotstown and with it the records had been destroyed." Garrett's efforts to remedy this historical void which became known during the research for his published and rather better known work "History of The Kreuz Creek Charge" 1924 resulted in the current manuscript "the Minutes of Zion's Classis were gone through systematically. At that time a great many notes on the New Oxford Charge were gathered with the hope of using them some time in the future." Garrett's history follows the Pastors and notable congregational members of the church from the Rev. Carl Ludwig Boehme in 1775 through to Rev. Sheely in the early 1920's and the contemporary ministers of the church at the time of writing in 1937 covering many of the major events expansions victories and tragedies of the necessarily small originally German immigrant driven and maintained church in rural Adams County. The area is necessarily considerably altered from even Rev. Garrett's day but family names of the original congregation can doubtless be found among the followers of St. Paul's UCC of New Oxford PA. and a number of other places of worship that serve the descendents of the original German and Scots-Irish inhabitants of the region. It is a safe assumption from a historical point of view that the Reverend Garrett's history might be the only collected survival of a number of Pennsylvania families and personalities. If this work was published beyond this working manuscript then we can find no trace either in trade or in US institutional holdings. unknown books
1902Best.-Nr. 85452New York: Selmar Hess 1902. First Edition. Two Volumes 8 vols bound in 2 bound from parts. Large Quarto. 30cm. Later institutional pebble green cloth with leather title labels. Light wear to the cloth some chipping to title labels bright strong and handsome; internally clean private library stamp to flyleaves cosmetic cracking to innner front joint of Vol I each plate with a captioned tissue guard and with general contents and title pages for the respective volumes bound in at the front of each volume thus the plate lists and explanatory matter are at the beginning of each volume and the larger bulk of the books is taken up with a wealth of plates and engravings; slight dampstaining to a couple of margins not affecting text or the outstanding quality of the plates. A very good clean set. A wildly enthusiastic and imposing collection of contemporary engravings and depictions of notable characters from popular literature executed by important artists and illustrators. Work by Landseer Doré Gerome and an army of others depicting characters from Dickens Coleridge the Greek Myths and just about every literary fandom from the 19th century and earlier. An interesting reflection on an area of publishing and printing that was once incredibly popular but has now been entirely replaced by Instagram and a well curated Tumblr. Selmar Hess unknown books
1990Best.-Nr. 82775Montgomery Alabama: The S.S. Seay Sr. Educational Foundation 1990. Stated First Edition. Octavo. 23.5cm. Publisher's white rexine titled in gilt to spine and front board. Dustjacket. xii; 297pp 1pp Biographical information to rear. Bumping to corners and spine ends some soiling of the white boards here and there in a scuffed and rubbed dustjacket with some creasing to edges and some areas of loss most notably the upper right corner of the front panel and a small triangle of loss to the rear panel. The printing process used for the dustjacket seems to have resulted in a very easily scuffed and rubbed end result with the majority of copies of this title showing signs of this. Internally clean with a lengthy gift inscription to the pastedown from Nathaniel and Karen Jackson of Montgomery Alabama along with a list of contact numbers for members of the Jackson family. A very good copy in a dustjacket that shows wear without surrendering durability. The Reverend Seay was a prolific activist for civil rights in Alabama beginning with his attempts in 1949 to support a young African-American woman in her case against two Alabama police officers whom she accused of rape. A few years later Seay was indicted along with 88 other activist protestors for his involvement in the Alabama Bus Boycott and in 1960 he was once again indicted for his support of the Committee to Defend Martin Luther King and the Struggle for Freedom in The South and their part in the March 1960 New York Times full page advertisement entitled "Heed Their Rising Voices. 1895Best.-Nr. 178171895. Reverend L.E Keith Feelix Feeler. Female Filosofy Fished Out and Fried. Cleona P.A.: G. Holzapfel Publishing 1895. First edition with original pictorial cloth boards and fifty illustrations of pro-suffrage political cartoons. An uncommon text. 336 pages. Keith's tone is often tongue-in-cheek but his purpose is to promote women's suffrage. As he argues in the preface: "Is it not the man that is unwomanly ans unmanly too in strutting about as if he were the lord of creation . Where is the consistency in allowing a woman to own property and take care of men's childrne and not giving her the power to protect either of them" While some countries extended minor voting rights to women in the year of this book's publication full suffrage would not be granted to American women until almost decades later. Boards toned and lightly soiled but the front cover remains attractive and the design is still bold. Spine sunned and bumped at head and tail spine titles faded; front hinge worn through for 3.5" inches. One-inch chip on spine shows shelfwear. Internal text block tight and the pages are clean and bright. Overall in good condition. As of March 2022 less than 15 copies held by libraries and institutions worldwide per OCLC Wolrdcat. 1843Best.-Nr. 4025Berkeley: T.R. Marvin 1843. First edition. Very Good . Original publisher's cloth binding with gilt to front board. Minor loss of cloth to crown of spine. Faint residue of removed library label to spine and front board. Peach endpapers. Light scattered foxing as is typical of the period. Inscribed on the front endpaper by Ward's husband the compiler: "Reverend Mr. Ellingwood with the respects of J.W. Ward." Bookplate on the front pastedown reveals that the recipient Rev. Ellingwood went on to donate the volume to the Theological Seminary of Bangor Maine. A scarce and important example of a published American elegiac volume produced in this case by an eminent family to mourn the loss of an educated woman. Memoirs is unrecorded by OCLC and has never appeared at auction. In their marriage James Wilson Ward and Hetta Lord Hayes Ward united two prominent Northeastern families. A senator and Congregationalist minister James descended from the founders of Plymouth and had attended Andover and Amherst. Hetta the daughter of a judge and niece of a Dartmouth president was herself a graduate of Miss Grant's Seminary Academy. The present volume released "exclusively for private circulation among the friends of the deceased" is a testament to Hetta's value not as a daughter who married well or a wife who effectively managed a house but as a companion an intellectual and an individual. In this sense it deconstructs the period's expectations of separate spheres or hierarchy between sexes. With an opening letter by Susan Hayes Hetta's mother as well as a copy of the eulogy conducted by her husband the book reveals vast details about who Hetta was as a person. Both describe her as tender and affectionate; but time and again emphasis is placed on her mind. Though Hetta was skillful with a needle as a child according to her mother "her numberless questions interested and surprised me.She acquired a fondness for poetry. She became as much interested in the in the study of the exact sciences as in the works of imagination making herself acquainted with the higher branches of Mathematics Algebra Geometry etc." James similarly eulogizes his wife. What becomes clear is that he is grieving the loss of a companion and equal. "If we have found a friend of distinguished excellence and for years rejoiced with that friend in mutual interchange and warm affections it is natural when death intervenes and separates us from the dear object of our love to contemplate their virtues.First characteristic which I would notice which she possessed in an eminent degree is an ardent love of truth. She possessed great powers of abstraction. She saw with great clearness the point of an argument and was quick to distinguish between sophistry. She loved to trace the workings of the human mind." Not satisfied simply to have their own testaments to Hetta's extraordinary mind the compilers included to the last half of the book a collection of her own poetry and prose. A scarce work in a genre underappreciated in American literature and history. Such coterie publications of intimate mourning were uncommon for the time particularly for a woman. National Cyclopedia of American Biography 148. Very Good . T.R. Marvin unknown books

1819Best.-Nr. 59962Paris: Chez Arthus Bertrand 1819. First edition in French first published in English London 1816. 8vo. 4 volumes: 4 lxxiv 309; 4 346; 4 432; 4 517 pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait to volume one. This work contains a portion of the king's autobiography the original of which is now lost. Some controversy exists over who actually wrote the book and it is variously attributed to a number of authors; Clarke 1766-1834 the biographer of Lord Nelson was certainly involved in its publication. James 1633-1701 the second surviving son of Charles I served as James II King of England and Ireland and James VII King of Scotland 1685-1688 when he was deposed by the Glorious Revolution. Some foxing but a very good copy. Somewhat later French green calf spine faded uniformly to brown gilt ornaments and labels on spine marbled endpapers and edges. 7210.
