George Crabbe 24 December 1754 3 February 1832 was an English poet and naturalist. The two works for which Crabbe became best known were The Village 1783 and The Borough 1810 both lengthy poems dealing with the way of life he had experienced. In 1783 he also married Sarah. In 1814 he became Rector of Trowbridge in Wiltshire where he remained. By the time of his death he was well regarded and a friend of William Wordsworth Sir Walter Scott and other major literary figures of the time. Complete in two volumes. In quarter diced bindings with marbled boards. Externally sound though rubbed. Some slight loss to paper on front board of volume II. Front joint of volume I starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. Armorial bookplate of Nathaniel Preston to front pastedowns of both volumes. Ink signatures to title pages. A wildly enthusiastic and imposing collection of contemporary engravings and depictions of notable characters from popular literature executed by important artists and illustrators. Work by Landseer Doré Gerome and an army of others depicting characters from Dickens Coleridge the Greek Myths and just about every literary fandom from the 19th century and earlier.
