One measuring 4 ¼ x 6 ½ inches with photograph measuring 3 â… x 5 ½ inches; heavily overpainted with manuscript caption and other manuscript recto and manuscript verso; worn with pinholes to mount and photograph with some staining very good minus. Other measuring 5 x 7 inches with photograph measuring 4 x 5 ½ inches; heavily overpainted mount with photographer's imprint "Rowley" and "Genesee" visible manuscript verso; worn with pinholes to mount very good. Overall very good minus. Two cabinet card portraits of Rev. James Edward Quigley 1854-1915. Quigley born in Canada West to Irish immigrants came to the US as a young child. He was ordained in 1879 and served the Diocese of Buffalo becoming its bishop in 1896. While in Buffalo he advocated for unions-particularly helping the Longshoremen-but against socialism and some union regulations that he saw as anti-Catholic. He was appointed archbishop of Chicago in 1903 where he organized a minor seminary and several parishes for immigrants from various countries and co-founded the missionary Catholic Extension Society. He also advocated for women's admission to DePaul University. These photographs of Quigley are heavily though not unartistically overpainted. He appears younger in the Rowley photograph; though the manuscript caption titles him "Archbishop" the photograph is likely from his time in Buffalo. unknown books
1958ref. List3836New York: The America Press 1958. 16 pp pamphlet measuring 3 ½ x 6 inches in paper wraps. Wraps with wear to edges and some wrinkling to bottom right corner; very good plus. Contents with fold at bottom right corner; very good plus. Overall very good plus. A booklet about segregation in the Catholic Church written in 1958 by William Hopp a reverend born and raised in the South. Though Hopp opens by stating that "Most of the Negroes here are a very low class of people morally socially and intellectually" 1 the pamphlet's message is ultimately anti-segregation. It centers around an incident in which an African American man attending Midnight Mass was asked by a white parishioner against Hopp's wishes to move to the back row of pews. The man instead left and refused to return to services at Hopp's church. Hopp describes this as a "test case" that the Black parishioner created to "involve the pastor in trouble" along racial lines-"just when the pastor thinks he is making progress in inculcating the teachings that will in time give the Negro his rights" 7-which he says are commonly created by "arrogant . educated Southern Negroes" 5. He describes discussing the incident with his conversion class and how he felt a sense of disgust the first time he shook hands with a Black man but emphasizes that the Catholic Church is for all people and that segregation contravenes its teachings. OCLC locates one copy of Hopp's booklet housed at Columbia University. . The America Press unknown books
1890ref. List3882Charlestown Massachusetts 1890. Double-sided printed cardstock measuring 5 ¾ x 3 ¼ inches. Some small stains and manuscript pencil markings. Excellent. A card advertising Martin J. Roche's Steamship Office and Catholic Book Store in the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston likely from the early 1890s. Roche was a steamship agent in Boston from about 1885 on advertising steamship travel especially from Ireland in Catholic newspapers like the Sacred Heart Review in which he also authored a recurring column titled "Our Irish Letter."1 The card notes that Roche is also an "Agent for 'S.H. Review'." Newspaper advertisements indicate that he opened the Catholic bookstore aspect of his business in about 1891; the card advertises "Irish Song Books Histories and Story Books of all kinds; also Prayer Books Rosaries Scapulars Statues etc. at the lowest prices". At the time-subsequent to the wave of Irish immigration during the famine-most Irish immigrants were young unmarried women. Many settled in the Boston area. 1 The Sacred Heart Review 1 no. 14 April 6 1895 21. . unknown books

The address listed on the business card 31 Barclay St. dates it to between 1862 and Cullen's death in 1874. The New York Tablet 1858-1881 was a Catholic periodical managed by Irish immigrant author Mary Anne Sadlier wife of publisher James Sadlier. The Sadliers were prominent in New York's Irish Catholic society and their friends included Archbishop John Hughes Canadian politician Thomas D'Arcy McGee and activist and Catholic convert Orestes Brownson. 1960ref. List3032Ciudad Juárez Mexico 1960. Scrapbook in album with string binding; twenty-two double-sided pages measuring 9 ¾ x 12 ¼ inches with some items not affixed. Pages delicate with marginal damage; items very good plus to excellent. Overall very good plus. A scrapbook containing photographs sacramental cards programs and clippings relating to various church functions at the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in Ciudad Juárez Mexico between the 1930s and 1960s. The church was built next to the original Franciscan mission built im the mid-1600s. Most of the events are various years’ feasts of St. Francis and of Our Lady of the Angels of Portiuncula as the parish is Franciscan. Many of its parishioners seem to have been members of the Third Order of St. Francis; one photograph shows a number of men women and children wearing the scapular and cord of the Order posed around the church’s Monseñor Baudelio Pelayo. Other photos show a festival for the children the priest receiving a medal and a retreat at Senecú a small village outside Juárez. Clippings and flyers concern various Franciscan conferences and a visit to Juárez by Franciscan leader Augustin-Joseph Sépinski. unknown books
1934ref. 5345San Antonio Tx: Incarnate Word 1934. Good. 4pp. Folio. Previously folded with some separation at fore-edge from central horizontal fold. Chipping at edges affecting some text at corners and fore-edge. Browned and a somewhat brittle. A scarce diatribe against the secular Mexican government issued by Leopoldo Ruiz the Archbishop of Morelia from the safety of the Catholic University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio during late 1934. The text demonstrates the ongoing tensions and conflict between religious and government authorities in Mexico following the Cristero War in the late 1920s the period of greatest violence between the two sides after the adoption of the Constitution of 1917. Ruiz was Pope Pius XI's direct representative in negotiations with the Mexican government to resolve their disagreements but such was the animus of the parties that he was exiled in 1932 after which he settled in San Antonio whence he published this screed addressed to the "bishopry clergy and Catholics of Mexico" in which accused the government of "revolutionary Socialism" that obligated the dutiful opposition of the Church. A very scarce San Antonio Spanish-language imprint; OCLC locates only a pair of microfiched copies of this text at Emory and BYU with the origin of the original unclear. Incarnate Word unknown books

1856ref. 4156Mexico City: Imprenta de M. Murguia 1856. Good plus. 28pp. Original printed wrappers stitched. Paper reinforcement on blank verso of front wrapper. Some edge wear; moderate dust soiling and toning. Scarce plea by the inhabitants of Zamora directed to the Constituent Congress asking it not to allow in the Republic the freedom of worship proposed mid-1850s revision of the Mexican Constitution. The liberal constitution re-established a parliamentary federal government and formally enshrined the abolition of slavery and important civil rights but it also ended Catholicism as the official religion of Mexico and sought to remove much of the Church's power by establishing secular public education forcing the sale of church property and ending its legal privileges under the guise of freedom of religion. The petition which was written in response to the appearance of the proposed reform in a local newspaper begs the congress to preserve "la religion de sus padres" and recites a veritable litany of historical societal and cultural contributions of the Catholic Church to Mexico. The document is signed in print by hundreds of Zamora residents. Tensions over the role of Catholicism in Mexico and many other reforms effected by the Constitution of 1857 eventually led to the outbreak of the Reform War in 1858. Published in attractive printed wrappers; we locate an example only at the Bibliotheca Nacional de España. Imprenta de M. Murguia unknown books
1847ref. 2345Mexico City: November 17 1847. About very good. Broadside approximately 12 x 8.5 inches. Previously folded two small tape repairs on blank verso. Small chip at upper left corner. Contemporary manuscript rubrics. Light toning and dust soiling. This scarce order was issued by the Archbishop of Mexico two months after the capture of Mexico City by the United States Army. It contains six articles that detail instructions for administering the last rites and orders for several other difficult matters in the occupied city. The extreme unction is to be performed secretly only in the mornings and at night unless the physician believes it is not possible to wait and further instructions are given on how to proceed secretly but properly with the ritual. The fifth article states that that if the American troops insult the residents the clergy should try to restore calm to obtain assistance from the local guards and to inform the American garrison commanders. The final article states that parish priests should "Proceder con la mayor prudencia y usar de los medios y vias mas suaves á fin de evitar toda clase de disturbios." An interesting reflection of the official fear of American distaste for Catholicism; we locate only one example at Yale. November 17 unknown books
