1910réf. BK0073New York and N.p. 1910. Two cabinet cards. One measuring 4 ¼ x 6 ½ inches with photograph measuring 3 â… x 5 ½ inches; heavily overpainted with manuscript caption and other manuscript recto and manuscript verso; worn with pinholes to mount and photograph with some staining very good minus. Other measuring 5 x 7 inches with photograph measuring 4 x 5 ½ inches; heavily overpainted mount with photographer's imprint "Rowley" and "Genesee" visible manuscript verso; worn with pinholes to mount very good. Overall very good minus. Two cabinet card portraits of Rev. James Edward Quigley 1854-1915. Quigley born in Canada West to Irish immigrants came to the US as a young child. He was ordained in 1879 and served the Diocese of Buffalo becoming its bishop in 1896. While in Buffalo he advocated for unions-particularly helping the Longshoremen-but against socialism and some union regulations that he saw as anti-Catholic. He was appointed archbishop of Chicago in 1903 where he organized a minor seminary and several parishes for immigrants from various countries and co-founded the missionary Catholic Extension Society. He also advocated for women's admission to DePaul University. These photographs of Quigley are heavily though not unartistically overpainted. He appears younger in the Rowley photograph; though the manuscript caption titles him "Archbishop" the photograph is likely from his time in Buffalo. unknown

1961réf. E5140528005North Central Publishing Company 1961-01-01. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good . 9x6x2. Signed by Editor. SIGNED BY EDITOR WARMLY INSCRIBED TO BISHOP JOHN ROACH on the front free endpaper of Volume 1. This two-volume set in slipcase is in excellent condition. Pages are clean and have no marks other than the inscription. Cover corners are square binding tight. There is a bindery flaw on the back cover of volume 2 where it looks like the buckram cloth was adhered over a scrap of paper that somehow slipped between the boards and cloth or was otherwise applied unevenly. Slip case is very good with a surface scuff and small indentation on one side. Bishop Roach was Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis from 1975 to 1995. He delivered the benediction at the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter. Books that sell for $9 or more ship in a box; under $9 in a bubble mailer. 1749réf. 001455France 1749. In French and Latin. Volume IX nine only. A rare book "with approval and privilege of the King." The French Revolution and the persecution of the Roman Catholic Church in France in the 1790s makes this a truly rare volume to have survived as many churches were looted and damaged and clergy persecuted imprisoned and executed. Tome Neuvieme. A Paris Rue S. Jacques Chez: Gabriel Martin a l;etoile; J.B. Coignard & Ant. Boudet a la Bible d'or; Pierre-Jean Mariette aux Colomnes d'Hercule; Hippolyte-Louis Guerin a S. Thomas d'Aquin. M.Dcc. XLIX. Avec Approbation et Privilege de Roi." Wear typical of a 260 year old book. There is much wear to leather cover which we believe is speckled calf. Five raised bands on spine with gilt illustrations and titles. The gilt is remarkably still bright. Wear to spine includes some chipping to top and bottom three small worm holes and a partial separtion to leather cover. Front hinge is split on outside leather but cover is firmly attached sewn inside. Corners are bumped worn and chipped and you can see through to the paperboards inside the leather. Edges were once illustrated with gilt but that is largely worn away. Three inch corner section on the back cover is missing. Pages are bordered in faded red on all sides. Marbelized endpapers in green yellow white and pink have peeled a bit from bottom inside front cover and fep and there is some chipping. There is a large chip of endpaper missing from back inside cover. A laid in engraving proclaims the book "A Monsier Tuppin Cure de Toury." and was probably done at time of printing. Alas we have not been able to identify the curate but tourists do visit Toury's churches. Pencilled booksellers notes on fep. There is some staining to bottom of feps and next four pages. Pages are bright and most are suprisingly unblemished but there is some foxing to some pages most notably to lower corners. Several pages have bent corners. The rear endpage has a crease to top corner. Quotes are for illustrative purposes only and remain the property of their copyright holders.
